Editorial Reviews

Review

"This is for a crime thriller reader who likes full characters, and contemplation of the psychological dimensions of the dark ... certainly it's powerful." - Leslie Gardner for e-thriller.com

"I highly recommend this book to anyone that loves a good plot, some paranormal twists, and characters that will leave you wanting more. A great read!" - Tracee Gleichner for Readers' Favorite

From the Author

The Reading The Dead series originally began as a screenplay I wrote back in 2011, purely for fun. After moving on to short stories, I began to feel the urge to try my hand at something bigger. While going back and reading my original script, rough though it was, I found a bit of magic in the evolving relationship between the two main characters, LAPD Detective Sarah Milton and her teenage, ghostly sidekick, Anna Nigma. I realized as I read it that not only did the story work across different genres, encompassing everything from a paranormal comedy to a crime thriller, but at its heart, it was really about none of these things. The police drama, suspense, thrills, supernatural and mystic elements - they were just the icing on the cake. What drew me to my original script, and what I endeavored to pass along in this book, was the tale of two best friends, separated by years, who must find a place in their lives for one another again, after going on alone for so long. That's what this book series means to me. I hope you'll find something of equal value when you read it for yourself.

I received a free copy of this book from the Goodreads Group Lovers of the Paranormal in exchange for an honest review.

Overall, I really thought this book was great and immediately after I finished it, I started reading the next in the series – which is always a good indication of my level of enjoyment.

Sarah Milton has the ability to see and communicate with ghosts. When she was a child, she had a ghost friend who she named Anna Enigma. Of course, others thought this was an imaginary friend. Growing up, she was an outcast and people thought she was crazy because that thought that she talked to herself. When Sarah was in her teens, her mother was murdered and Anna Enigma disappeared - just when Sarah needed her the most. The murder wasn’t solved.

Now, Sarah holds a doctorate in criminal psychology and is a detective with the Los Angeles Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit. Sarah and her unit are hunting down a psychopathic killer. During this time, Sarah has a life-altering incident with the result being that she can see and communicate with Anna Enigma again (as well as other ghosts). Anna turns out to be a pivotal member of the Violent Crimes team in tracking down and capturing the killer. Of course, Sarah has to figure out a way to explain what she knows to her coworkers.

This is one of those books that I just couldn’t put down. The last part is action packed and full of suspense. I love a great paranormal story and I love a great mystery story. When they are combined together in such a great way, well I am now a devoted fan. On top of that, the characters in the story are great, even with their flaws. This includes Sarah’s fellow police officers and friends. There is a lot of humor in this book, which just makes it even better.

I was given the book Reading the Dead (The Sarah Milton Chronicles,#1) written by J.B. Cameron in exchange for an honest review.
J.B. Cameron started writing this book as a screenplay, After many revisions and a lot of editing it turned into the series we see today.

Sarah Milton grew up known as "schizo" Sarah, because of her snarky imaginary friend Anna Nigma. In her world Anna was the only real companion she had apart from her books. Kids at school found her unusual so they steered clear of her.
At fifteen her mother is murdered and the day of the funeral she wakes up and cant find Anna.with Anna gone Sarah can function normally, no more conversations with thin air.
As her mothers killer is still at large Sarah throws herself into the police academy much to her fathers dismay. Eventually she finds herself working for the LAPD Violent Crimes Unit on the hunt for the serial killer known as Raithe. After a close brush with death Sarah wakes up in hospital to find Anna sitting beside her. She soon comes to realise Anna isn't her imaginary friend but a ghost a very powerful one.
On a quest to find Raithe before he strikes again they uncover mysteries hey never thought possible.

Reading the Dead is a wonderful mix of crime thriller and paranormal fantasy. I found myself drawn to the characters of this book especially Anna a snarky thirteenear old with a mischievous side. I could also relate to Sarah who uses books as a way to escape reality.
I really enjoyed reading this book and i am looking forward to reading more of this series. I give it 5 stars as it is very professionally written, you can find it at Itunes and Amazon for under $4.

Sarah was a normal 6 year old child, one day a friend showed up to play. Not just any friend but a secret
friend and her name was Anna. Anna and Sarah was as close as sisters and yet no one could see Anna
which made their friendship even more special. When Sarah’s mom was murdered. Anna drifted away.
It is now 15 years later and Sarah is a Detective. She is trying to capture a serial killer, RAITHE. Raithe has
a brutal way of killing and leaves behind his famous signature. While investigating his latest killing, Sarah
and her team discover a symbol unlike any they have seen. Before Sarah can dive into finding out what
this symbol means the unthinkable happens. Walking into by dog food finds Sarah in the middle of a
robbery. Sarah’s life was hanging when an old friend shows up and she is giving a second chance at life.
On the mend Sarah soon dives back into the world of Raithe and his symbol. The symbol she soon finds
out is from ancient times and was used to bind spirits. When used it would keep them from passing onto
the afterlife. While discovering information about this symbol Sarah learns she has a secret gift and
Anna is no ordinary “secret friend”. Sarah was giving a second chance and she is not about to waste any
time finding Raithe.
Reading the Dead was an awesome read! I found myself so deep into this book that at times I am sure
you could only see my feet ! Sarah finds herself with so many puzzles to solves, her life mission has
been finding out what happened to her mother, finding this serial killer and also who is Anna ?? Who is
her family and what happened to her as a child?? Sarah is a strong character and went thru so much and
yet bounced right back into things. Although we do not get all the answers we need it leaves us hanging
and wanting more ! I can’t wait to read book 2. This is packed full of powerful spirits!

5 ghostly stars
