Yet, as Cook notes, Deuteronomy is little understood for its significance for our faith. He has done superb work here to make Deuteronomy accessible to a wider lay public and range of clergy. The advantages of Cook’s “Reading Deuteronomy” compared to other commentaries are: 1) readability – with a minimum of scholars’ jargon, and, where needed, terms are explained; 2) price -- half of the price of many other good commentaries on Deuteronomy; 3) moderate length – with a focus on getting the key elements across without burdening the reader with excessive details; and 4) strong content -- building on the expertise displayed in his earlier excellent biblical commentaries (e.g., “The Apocalyptic Literature”, “The Social Roots of Biblical Yahwism,” and “Second Isaiah”). And one should not at all be put off by the dry subtitle chosen for this excellent work (i.e., “A Literary and Theological Commentary”). This book might be more appropriately sub-titled: "An Unforgettable Journey of Faith."
