About the Author

Debbie has been a national consultant since 2000, but still has those back to school dreams in the fall. After playing school in the basement of her childhood home in Lititz, Pennsylvania, she earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Millersville University and Temple University and spent the next four decades as an educator. She's worked as a classroom teacher, migrant education teacher, Title I reading teacher, and literacy coach in Pre-K through grade 10 in diverse public school settings. Her love of teaching stems from her love of learning. I have always loved learning. Becoming a teacher was a way I could share that love of learning with children and eventually, with adults. A big part of her learning is listening to teachers and their professional development needs. When I work with teachers, I try to understand their needs by finding out what they know and listening to their questions. Then I begin where they are and work with them to help them take the next steps toward where they (and/or their school systems) want (them) to be. I believe in professional reading and professional learning communities, and support teachers in their quest to best meet the needs of all students in their classrooms. Debbie's ideas for her books also come from her work with teachers. She listens for frequently asked questions, patterns, teachers' needs, and keeps a writer's notebook to collect ideas, thoughts, and notes. Often, the old joke comes to mind: how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. That's how I write: Bit by bit, on planes, in hotel rooms, in my office on a rare day. Teachers' questions and comments spur me on through my daily, ongoing work in classrooms, which sustains my craft. Debbie's family has changed and grown in recent years. Her son, Jon, and daughter, Jessica, are both married, and she now has a granddaughter, Chloe, with another on the way. Debbie's husband, Tom, passed away in 2012.

As with all things in education trends cycle about every 10 years. People put new names on things and then make more money. However after being in education for 20 years and seeing these cycles there are just some educators/authors who hit the nail on the head. It doesn’t take a reinvented name of a former strategy or method. This book still hits the nail in the head when it comes to literacy!

This is a great book for both new and "seasoned" teachers. Ms. Miller offers many examples of ways to "amp up" your reading instruction and to do away with a lot of the old Round Robin styled reading. I have to admit, it's a little hard to let go of monitoring every single word my students read, but once I started utilizing her reading club structure, I found that my children are MUCH more excited about reading. I am giving them difficult comprehension questions, and even the struggling readers are doing well. John Hattie and other experts in the field of education have found evidence that peer discussions, grouped both heterogeneously and homogeneously, lead to raised student performance. I find her suggestions and book lists to be very helpful. It's an enjoyable read and I finished it over a weekend. Now my students are enjoying the influences of Ms. Miller's ideas mixed in with mine. Excellent!

Everyone would benefit from reading this book. Even though it is a teacher education book it sure has made me look at my reading habits and how I can get more out of my reading experience. Using reading strategies wasn't even mentioned when I was in school (that was a long time ago) but it applies to the little kids that are in this classroom and all of us. I have found that when I started using some of these strategies myself my reading pleasure and understanding have both jumped.

I haven't read this yet but have a major complaint. I am reading this as part of a book group I am in. All other participants have print copies. I assumed (incorrectly) as with most more recent Kindle editions there would be real page numbers. It is causing me significant grief just to determine where each weeks assignments are being taken from as we aren't considering the book in order written! These types of books should have real page numbers!
