Was Reading Steele the best book I have ever read? No. Was it the holy grail of writing? No. Was it off the charts hot? No.
But that is not all a book needs to have to sometimes carry a spark. This short somehow did manage to light an imaginative fire in me.
First let me say that for those of you who may be fact checkers this will not be the book for you. There is a fictional bird species and some societal references that are not accurate. Such as Charles Manson burying bodies in Arizona. He committed his crimes in Los Angeles. But you know what: This. Is. Fiction.
As I began 'Reading Steele' I felt a little conflicted. On one hand I sensed some of what I was reading was stunted and on the other I felt the story was being rushed to set the stage. But the characters wit and charm, in his internal thoughts, had me grasping for more and as the story unfolded I was glad I held on.
In a type of MC initiation ceremony Damon is bitten by a scorpion. He soon finds out that the side effect of such is that when someone touches him he can hear their internal "thoughts". Which ultimately has him realizing that one of the club members, Steele, is attracted to him.
This of course leads to them having a stolen moment and, yes, an insta love. But, heh, this is only 54 pages and the author is clear in the blurb that this is happy for now.
They soon discover that in order to keep their relationship a secret, and protect each other, they must do a little dirty work for uncle Brick who “funds” the club. The way he comes by the funds is very unique, no drugs here, and it finds Damon and Steele trying to shield the last of a species – and themselves.
'Reading Steele', which is a hugely appropriate name I might add, was catching in the fact that it did not so much center around a hugely corrupt or dangerous motorcycle club. That was simply a backdrop to the kind of person Steele thought himself to be.
The story itself was thought provoking in its play on being able to read your sexual partners mind. Can you imagine knowing if your touch is too soft or too rough, where they want to be stroked or knowing what they’ve always pictured their first time to be like.....and being able to give that to them? Wow!
For me 'Reading Steele' was a fun escape. Something that would be a quick little read after a heavy, angsty novel. It’s a nice little reminder that we are reading fiction and not everything has to be spot on, real or perfect to be catching and enjoyable. It’s a book that even through some “Ewwww, no” moments gave me characters and a story line that were both enjoyable.
I really liked this story. It was short, but it wasn't too short. I was still able to get a feel for the characters and I did feel their affection and love for each other. Damon and Steele, very HOT characters. And whoa boy, the heat that Steele feels for Damon is just, wow.
The blurb tells it all except for the fact that Steele is very deep in the closet, the MC (motorcycle club) is also part of Damon's uncle's crew of black market reptile (animal, etc) dealers. When Damon is bitten by the odd scorpion, his ability to read thoughts center only around those of a sexual nature. Which is totally hot, and is perfect for a MM romance story. Damon and Steele want to be together in the open but know that they can't show their affection for one another around the rest of the gang. They often talk of plans for getting out, getting away, and they do. It's pretty low on the angst but I did still feel worried for them. I mean, who knows if something bad will happen.
This was a well written short story with a few spots I thought could have been done better/different. I will certainly be looking for the next installment. It ends with a HFN, and I can't wait to see what's next for these two crazy kids.
If you are looking for a short, light read with lots of fun, this book is for you. It does have some heavish moments but it all ends well in this one. I felt happy at the end, and I had been in a serious funk earlier (I had just watched the movie Ghost. Totally sobbed like a baby at the end.) and this cheered me right up. Yay!
P.S. While it might be nice to be able to read your lovers thoughts about sex, I can only imagine how frustrating it could be. :) I would love to have this skill if I could turn it on or off. The fact that Damon couldn't just made it that much funnier (he would pick up random thoughts from strangers, totally LOL moments).
