This sweet, well-paced work is concerned with the gathering of five women who live on the banks of the peaceful Sweet Oak River deep in the Ozarks. Each of them is in need of love, and the matriarch of the group gently guides them to their own best decisions through a romance book club. A subplot in which a boy from outside the community has a whirlwind romance with a hometown girl features an unexpected plot twist, and the result is much more realistic than other examples of the trope. Of special enjoyment for avid readers are the discussions of other actual romance novels. Karen Peakes's narration is excellent; her slight country twang hits the right regional notes. The low-key approach to the relationships makes this one suitable for readers of Christian fiction. VERDICT: For romance listeners and fans of gentle fiction. —J. Sara Paulk, Houston Cty. “For any excuse and especially for anyone who enjoys stories about the Ozarks, Reading the Sweet Oak by Jan Stites would be a good choice.”—Mari Winn, The Joplin Independent

I have to say that I wasn't sure I would really be able to get into the book as I am picky about the author that I enjoy reading. All I did not know the author other than she to be Ron's sister. I found the book to be delightful and highly recommend it~
NOW after reading her book, I am in very high hopes of her writing another one like it again. I found it to be a real easy book to follow along with, it grabbed me in right away. It is a very good and enjoyable story, and became a real page turner. I found myself unable to put the book down! I really liked Jan's writing style of how she lets you know which which character is going to be the focal point of that the chapter.
I would recommend this book to any and all whom enjoy reading, who like anything to do with the outdoors, the water, and a good hearted story about how people come together in a time of need. The story follows what I have always been told, plant the seeds you want to reap, and it will come back to you when and if you ever really need them. Also stated.....do good unto others, give, and treat people with kindness and it will be returned 10 fold~ That is what I got out of reading this book......thank you~ Jan Stites for that awesome reminder of what my late mother always used to tell me.
Happy reading to all~
important truth that is rarely explored in fiction--that the reading
of stories profoundly affects our lives. Sweet Oak is about five women who
meet and discuss romance novels. One struggles with being pressured
by family to marry a rich jerk she does not love, another who has been
taught by her folks that homosexuality is evil struggles to accept and love
her Gay grandson, another is combating ELS (Empty Life Syndrome),
the forth finds strength by emulating strong romance heroines, the fifth,
that great sex is liberating. All find their way by reading romances.
The characters are interesting and for the most part, likable.
The prose is smooth and sensuous, a delight to read.
It’s a good book that will stay with you like a love song that replays
in your head forever.
