Most notable for its criticism of current literacy teaching's tendency to encourage students to interrupt their reading with metacognitive strategies and note-taking, this manifesto makes the can-it-really-be-this simple argument that the best way to teach students to read is to let them read.
Atwell's experience is hard to beat- multiple decades as a teacher combined with significant time spent in the mainstream of literacy education. While the work does not completely neglect students with learning differences, more attention to modifications for students with neurological obstacles would have been nice.
