It's not strictly a commentary, more a devotional study, (although it does not claim to be so) by a profound scholar, Archbishop William Temple. It is lucid and intelligent, fairly expository, and with a fine literary style. It was my first introduction to St John's Gospel, and though I have bought several commentaries on it since, it remains by far the best reading on John. His purpose is "an attempt to share my own thoughts as I read the profoundest of all writings." He gives a general introduction to the book, and regards the apostle as the author, either directly or indirectly. "I am concerned with what the Holy Spirit says to me through the Gospel"
He writes in some detail, and clearly believes what he reads. I am not put off by any differences in Churchmanship- I am a Pentecostal, - because the author was clearly a saintly man who loved the Lord. Read this, and you will walk through Judea and Galilee with the Author, you will get a deep understanding of His teaching.
I particularly love his exposition on John VIII 1-11. It is virtually a sermon on judgment, actually the refusal to condemn, and eventually breaks into prayer. And it opens with the phrase that says it all- "these odious ecclesiastics"!
No one can fail to profit from readng this book.
