Mark Miner does an excellent job reading the paradigms, vocabulary, Practice and Review, Sententiae Antiquae and verious readings from each chapter. Hearing the words (proficiently) read aloud does help with comprehension. The severe R trills and staccato rhythm in some places irritated me a little, but I was able to get over it and "get" the material. When I went back to listen to previous chapter sentences, I was surprised to discover I understood what he was saying without having to mark syntax and translate each word.

All in all, I would recommend these CDs for any serious Latin student. The price is a bit steep in my opinion, but ultimately worth it.

These recordings are a required item for a course that I am taking. THe teacher is Richard A. Lafleur, who is the editor of Wheelock's Latin, so I am going to assume that his recommendation is a good one.

I am just getting started with the course but so far I am enjoying the vivid, macho spin that the reader puts onto the language.

Those who are interested might want to check out the Latin blog at Dickinson College. Christopher Francese, who is a professor there, has a blog in which he reads literary snippets aloud. Very enjoyable.

This is an indispensable resource for anyone working through Wheelock's Latin on a self-study basis. I listened to this both while following along in the book, and also on my morning commute. Not only did it correct my (previously terrible) pronunciation, it reinforced my comprehension immensely.

That said, the product does have its flaws. My basic criticism is that it doesn't include the Loci Antiqui and the Loci Immutati. It provides the paradigms, vocabulary, Sententiae Antiquae, and reading for each chapter, and at the end there are three selections from the Loci Antiqui, apparently just as a filler for the fourth CD. This is an unfortunate omission, and is the reason I only gave four stars. Also, as another reviewer has noted, it moves a little too quickly, and pauses should have been included after the vocabulary words and Sententiae Antiquae to permit the listener to repeat.

Still, for what is provided, the product is well worth the price. The Wheelock text, together with the vocabulary cards, workbook, and CD are as good as it gets for Latin self-study.

Allow me to echo the complaints of other buyers, so they don't seem like voices crying in the wilderness:

1. The exaggerated, slow speaking quickly becomes cloying.
2. Only selections of the book (e.g., loci antiqui) are read -- not the whole thing.
3. But MOST ANNOYINGLY, the reader doesn't pause after the entries, giving you time to repeat. It's like he was being paid to read it as fast as you can. If it hadn't been for that, this set would have been worth purchasing.

I feel strongly that it was not.

I've found these recordings to be a big help in moving through the lessons in Wheelock's Latin. I subtracted one star because the recorded information is no longer well-synched with the current edition of the book (7th edition, 2011), so the referenced page numbers are almost all incorrect, and some discussions in the recordings are not included in the text (and vice versa).

this is that last "thing" that really makes your studies complete. if you want to learn a language you have to throw everything but the kitchen sink at it when it comes to practice. the reader sounds great and you learn a lot more about pronunciation and elision from listening.

but... he doesn't read the practice and review sentences. instead he reads the sententiae antiquae and these contain extra vocab much of which we are not forced to commit to memory. i may have been able to skip much more of the "reading along" and just been able to put my headphones on and go if he'd read from the practice and review instead. but the obligatory vocab in wheelock isn't very extensive (about 20 words per chpt. with 40 chpts. = 800 words)and so learning the sententiae sentences adds about 10-15 words from the chapter under your belt. so i'm ambivalent; )

also, he doesn't give the english translation after reciting each vocab word. so your quite "up stream without a paddle" if you don't have your book handy when it comes to those pesky words you just can't keep a handle on.

i gave it 4 stars because it is thorough and adds more vocab per chapter via the sententiae antiquae vocab. i only wish i could find a sanskrit text with such accessories!!!

An excellent resource for supplementing the gold standard in the learning of this still very vibrant and illuminating language! There are places where the speaking moves so quickly that you have to hit the pause button on your CD player after every sentence, just to have time to think. But the pronunciation is crisp, the "r's" trilled with deliberate exaggeration and the effect is to drive home auditory, as well as visual, proficiency with translating and comprehension. A definite advantage for those pursuing study of the world's most successful language.

While this satisfies my bottom line need to hear Wheelock's spoken, it is not without problems. I'll start by saying that the reader is very good, very articulate. But the sound levels jump around a bit which is distracting, the choice was made to say the number of each list item (in English) which grows tedious, and most importantly, there is a dearth of Loci' Ant'iqui' and Loci' Imm'ut'at'i. At this price, there simply ought to be a lot more.
