We first became acquainted with Jack McCabe and Lil in "The Wedding Favor" and like all of Cara Connelly's characters, they are vividly real, magnetic and smartly written. I was elated to see Jack's story come to life. He is a local NY rock star, reluctant to move onto the world stage, a tough fisted Texas country boy keeping his private life below the radar as best he can and a lover of all women.... one at a time.
The story has hooks coming out of the gate and kept me riveted until it ended. Lilianne is the cousin of Isabelle, and niece of Pierre for those who remember these characters fondly, and she is the girlfriend of Claude, a pompous Frenchman who views Jack as he would the dirt under his fingernail. Of course we hate him and the rivalry turns ugly. Fortunately, no one is Team Claude but Uncle Pierre.
Tyrell Brown also makes his appearances as Jack's best friend, complete with swagger and mega watt smile. Btw, Ty's story is available on Amazon right now for 99 cents so if you haven't read it, get it now.
I cannot wait to see what Ms Connelly will give us next. Hopefully, she's still brainstorming for this Save The Date series but if her gifted storytelling takes a new direction, I'll go there too. This one is worthy of five bright stars and I am happy to fully recommend it.
The backstory as to how they met was memorable to say the least. The reason why Lil didn't break up with her controlling ex was believable although I was annoyed at her several times for being a jerk. Fighting the bad guys was harrowing. I thought it dragged a bit or got convoluted at the end but nevertheless a strong, sexy romance. Believable characters and fabulous writing!
Construction worker by day and rock star by night Jack (Mac) McCabe enjoys his dual life. He appreciates the hard work he does, the men in his crew and the families they share with him and his cousin he has guardianship over. Three to four nights a week Mac steps on stage as the lead singer, guitarist and songwriter of The Devils a highly popular bar band in New York City, one that has the potential to make it big except that Mac is not interested. Mac is a man whore plain and simple; he flat out admits he wants and needs sex frequently and he makes no apology about it. Mac has a wild past but when Lili reenters his life things begin to change.
Lilianne Marchone was one of those heroines that I was slow to warm up to. It wasn't that I didn't sympathize with her past, but she seemed a bit self centered and selfish especially with the way she manipulated Jack (Mac) into sleeping with her the first time and the way she handled the man she'd been involved with for years. What I did appreciate about Lili is that she supported all sides of Jack, she never held his past against him (and there were times it had to be hard for her not to) and she trusted him implicitly. I also loved that she accepted his cousin, Wyatt, as family immediately and reached out to help him in his life.
I can't even begin to explain the craziness that erupts in this book, but I will say that Lili's ex is crazy, the uncle that raised her is a pretentious jerk, Jack's bevy of conquests include some not so nice women and always remember that at anytime anything you do can be photographed or recorded and might come back to haunt you. While this was a romance of pretty epic proportions there were elements of mystery, quite a bit of suspense and some banging good times in and out of the sack.
Throughout this book I was amazed at Jack and Lili's strong bond, their unwavering respect and admiration for one another and the absolute trust they had in one another and with them I laughed, I screamed, I sighed and I cried.
A fantastic journey of two people from very different backgrounds whose lives crossed paths not once but twice changing them both forever, Ready To Rock is a book you do not want to miss and one I know I will enjoy time and time again; it is just that good!
