Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

In REAGAN Reagan's life is examined through the lens of a conservative scholar who understands Reagan's goals, intentions, and motivations. Through exclusively obtained administration documents, Schweikart reveals Reagan's never-before seen initiative to create a North American energy zone---the forerunner to NAFTA and the internal battles in his administration to press his economic recovery act through. In newly declassified documents from such episodes in Reagan's presidency as Lebanon, new assessments of the cultural side of Reagan's war against the Soviets from sources behind the Iron Curtain, new interviews with Reagan insiders not previously consulted, Larry Schweikart provides a comprehensive look with new perspective and new sources, particularly those relating to the presidential years and especially as related to the economy and the Cold War. Reagan, the Midwestern boy, the young actor, the student protestor, the labor union leader, the combative governor, emerged as the most successful president of the 20th century.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful but Tough
By Patriot Mission on May 28, 2019
Dr. Schweikart has an amazing ability to put the listener in the room with Ronald Reagan (I bought the Audible version), whether it's a schoolroom in his early years, the negotiating room as the Screen Actors Guild boss, or the Oval Office as the 40th President of the United States. Having come of age during Reagan's first term, this tremendous biography helped me connect dots that were always a bit murky for me.

Larry does a great job of explaining and documenting details that helped illustrate why Reagan made certain decisions. The book doesn't sugar coat the places in history where Reagan made mistakes. Unlike fawning acolytes or relentless naysayers, Schweikart seems to play it down the middle and help us really go deep into the mind of "Dutch." This style helps clarify Nancy's role and those of his closest advisors.

Most importantly, I now have a clearer picture of how Reagan's influence shaped America for decades to come. I also found the epilogue explaining the similarities and unique differences with Donald Trump very enlightening.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
