If you're looking for a joystick to take to a local tournament or your friend's house, however, I can't recommend this stick on its own. It's extremely big and extremely heavy and after stuffing it in a duffel bag and carting it around a couple times, you'll want to find something more portable. I can't complain too much about this because I knew it going in and really just wanted it to use at home because it's just so impressive. If you want portability and a pretty solid experience overall, look into the MadCatz TE sticks. They're a little pricey themselves, but this baby is for people who have money to burn.
The Hori Real Arcade Pro VLX is the monument piece of arcade sticks. The front and top half of the Unit is made of metal. The side pieces and design of the stick matches that of an official Japanese Street Fighter IV Vewlix cabinet. The stick also uses a Sanwa JLF joystick and Sanwa OBSF-30 buttons, the highetst quality authentic Japanese arcade parts. The front bevel of the stick is set at a angle for your palms just like the Viewlix arcade cab. The base of this stick is really wide and very heavy. I am one of those people that belive so long as you can carry an arcade stick, It cannot be too heavy. With a lighter stick such as an Hori EX2 playing on the table may cause the stick to move about or slide around. The VLX stays put on my coffee table .
One of the other major draws is that this stick has 3 thumbscrews in the cord compartment that when removed allows you to open the stick like a hot rod car so that you can modify your stick (whilst voiding your warranty). So if you prefer certain Seimitsu arcade parts you can easily swap them out. As for modability and maintenence, the buttons are easily replaceable and the buttons have quick disconnects. The Sanwa JLF can be swapped out for a Seimits LS-32 or LS-56(with MS Plate) if you prefer a different type of joystick.
The only con I could say is the price, and for some it is definitely bigger than it needs to be. For most people a Madcatz TE would be a more practical choice, but if you are one that doesn't wan't a run of the mill product, get the VLX.
Edit: It's a few months later. Now this stick is sold out. I've been using this for home play. I've put in serious hours on using this stick. Nothing is changed. It is still the greatest stick ever built, but It seldom leaves the house. I don't regret this purchase. It's a keeper.
- Sanwa parts (JLF joystick & OBSF-30 main 8-buttons & one OBSF-24 Start button)
- Metal joystick case (& plastic white side pieces) that's VERY similar (but a few inchses shorter) to the real deal Taito Vewlix arcade cabinet
- 12.1-pounds
- Black painted wooden option board for more stability (can be screwed onto bottom plate but not required)
- Storage for 3M (9.8-ft) USB cable
Prior to the purchase, I was a bit reluctant b/c worrying about the possibility of a cheap hollow feeling & sound everytime I depress a button (this bugged me w/the Hori Real Arcade Pro 3 SA aka HRAP3-SA) however, the hollow feeling & sound on a VLX is a bit different than in a HRAP3-SA. I dunno, perhaps it has a thicker metal/steep panel compared to a HRAP3-SA?!? Everything about it oozes quality from the (mostly) metal consruction to the convenience of opening it up (only 3 screws FTW!). I sometimes open it just to appreciate & admire the ease & simplicity of it all (to open/close) yet at the same time oogle in it's intricacy w/everything else! If factoring in traveling around w/a stick (to tournaments, etc.) then I'd choose a V3-SA (or VX-SA for the 360) due to it's size & side handles. Only real complaints (if I had to nitpick) are the Sanwa button plugs has a somewhat rough texture (compared to my older Sanwa button plugs) & the cloth they supply's kinda small but no big deal really. Nothing else more to say than what's already been said in other reviews. This is one of the few cases of you get what you pay for!

Overall, quite awesome. The Real Arcade Pro VX provides similar form for less, but lacks the heft, beauty, and ease of maintenance afforded by the VLX. Compared to TE sticks, it's a very different approach re: palm rest; this one works better for me.
