Edit: so I've been using this kit for a while now and unfortunately need to knock off a star. The bore brushes don't hold up. Right now I'm using the .45 brush for my 9mm, and the 20g brush for my .45. No that's not a typo. The .45 brush has 'shrank' so much that I'm using it for my 9mm. I can no longer use the .45 brush for my .45acp, I need to use the 20g (which works beautifully for some reason). Otherwise still holds up as a good little kit.
This is, overall, a nice and well-laid out system, containing brushes for all common rifle calibers from .223-.308 (except .243) and common handgun calibers as well, along with 20 and 12 gauge shotgun. It has a bit of extra room in the case where you can add brushes for any missing calibers, and their system is compatible with standard brushes.
The patch pullers are plastic, but this is fine IMO since brass ones would react with copper solvent.
If you are reading this review so far, you are probably wondering why I gave 3 stars instead of 5. Here's the problem.
The product comes with a nice handle and adapted. The connectors on the handle end of the cables are smaller than on the other end, so you don't attach the handle to the wrong end. Cool. However, while the handle adapted on the Otis system is quite sturdy ... on this one it is made from an inferior metal and it broke under the strain of using it to pull one of their brushes through a barrel. It literally broke the first time I used it on the third pass through the bore.
The product IS still usable without the handle of you wrap the cable around your hand and pull hard, but a customer shouldn't have to do that.
This is a nice system, very comprehensive and well laid out. I love the Otis system, but I actually like this one better because there is no need for proprietary patches and I prefer the plastic patch holders anyway.
Unfortunately, the end connections on the cable and the adapter for the handle is of substandard quality such that it can't fulfill its function.
If they fixed this problem, even if they had to jack the price $2 to do it, this would be an excellent system.
First off, I don't have a 20 ga. shotgun, so I took out the 20 ga. bore brush and filled the container with about 30 cut-off q-tips (a common gun cleaner's friend). And I slid a few individually wrapped Rem Oil Wipes in one of the pockets, and also added a few 1" square cleaning patches (the patches included are about 2"x1" rectangles and bigger). Now the only thing I need for this kit is a small enough container to hold some Nitro Solvent, which isn't included with this kit.
It seems to me that the way the insides of this kit is packaged, it should have been done backwards. Anything you put in the mesh pockets will take away from the space already taken up by the big bore brush tubes, and the big wire brushes. Nonetheless, everything still fits without putting too much stress on the zipper. The zipper itself is a little more heavy duty than I expected, so extra points there. And the red brush holder is made of rubber so it won't crack and break.
Now yes, I actually did use this kit to clean a gun. I started with a .22 revolver. The only complaint I have here is that when using the plastic patch holder for the first time, it didn't fit down the barrel. There were two "wings" on the sides of it as a result from excess plastic (which can be seen in the photo), those just needed to be shaved off with a sharp knife. Everything else has worked perfectly so far. The cables are strong and everything threads on nicely. Using a cable instead of a rod took some getting used to, but in the end it's just as easy.
This is quite a good little kit. It's smaller than any other kit you're going to find, the case is heavy duty, and it's full of average if not better quality cleaning supplies. As a prepper, I could see these kits being worth a lot more as a potential post-apocalyptic currency than silver coins at the same price : )
After reading the reviews, I asked him a few questions on the cons and he did agree that the connectors on the handle end of the cables are smaller than on the other end. As for the 2 same size brushes, he said probably because those may be used more. But not sure.
He is happy with this kit.
