Dr. Ginde never wanted to be famous, but in 2015 her anonymity was snatched from her by an unscrupulous organization calling itself “the Center for Medical Progress.” (CMP).

Members of CMP used subterfuge to gain access to the offices and medical facilities of Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, where Savita worked as Chief Medical Officer.

After penetrating both the national office and many local Planned Parenthood organizations, these undercover and dishonorable CMP agents took surreptitious video of meetings and medical procedures, which they subsequently edited (even dubbing in their own audio!) to make it appear that Planned Parenthood was engaged in the sale of fetal tissue and body parts from human fetuses.

Fake news at its best.

People in favor of abortion rights, and those dead set against them, have fought a long battle in the U.S. Few, other than those murdered outright by abortion opponents, have suffered as much as Savita Ginde, whose conversations were recorded, then amended to make the best-known of the “fake news” abortion videos of 2015. Dr. Ginde wasn’t “selling baby parts,” as the video compilers claim. But the wave of harsh attention, engendered by the fallacious video in which she appeared, drove her and her family out of her home, and ultimately out of her job.

I was moved by this book’s civility, and Ginde’s essential plea. “Protest the cause,” she says, “not the people.” It’s fine, she explains, for Americans to disagree about abortion. It’s fine for opponents to protest peacefully outside a Planned Parenthood facility. But “Do not come to my house. Do not take photos of my children. Do not slander me online and threaten me on Twitter.” And even worse, do not enter a Planned Parenthood center with a gun and kill three people—which is what a man named Robert Dear did, in Ginde’s state of Colorado, after watching the corrupt videos. Following that brutality, it’s remarkable that Savita Ginde can present a balanced plea for compassion from both camps in the debate. This is a crucial book on a vital topic.

Put yourself in her shoes

A fast read and unputdownable, this book is a timely account of the real harm that misrepresented facts and manufactured crises can wreak on the lives of everyday people. Dr. Ginde recounts in detail the harrowing experience she and her family suffered in the aftermath of the Planned Parenthood video scandal of 2015, from being blindsided by her own employer, to going into hiding in the middle of the night over worries about the safety of her family. It is hard to imagine a dedicated health provider and thorough professional being faced with death threats over providing a legal and sometimes necessary medical service. Let this book be a clarion call to all Americans to set aside the rancor and judgment and instead to come to the table and discuss real solutions to the underlying problem everyone wants to solve. In the author's own words, "Let's raise the bar."

The greatest threat to choice since RvW

This book is a travesty and a serious risk to hard-won reproductive rights, Roe v. Wade. and choice. Ginde’s denial and refusal to fall on her sword are a gift to the anti-choice juggernaut. She continues to insist her comments were dubbed despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. She even admits she has never watched the recordings. Because of Ginde, there will always be people disturbed by the “trafficking of baby body parts.” Had she taken responsibility for her comments, this would have remained an isolated incident and kept at a distance from real reproductive health care.
