I am not a great cook - I have a gourmet quality wife who loves to cook for relaxation - but for 8 months we were long-distance commuters. I lived on a very small houseboat - meaning everything had to be carried in, water was at a premium, and there was a limit to the amount of electric stuff I could use at the same time. With a 2-burner hot plate and a copy of Real Fast Food as my primary reference, I was able to cook a fair number of the recipes to produce a most impressive meal with minimal trouble.

It is by no means a health-food diet - if you don't like butter and olive oil, this book is not for you. But if you like to make a good showing from time to time with food that tastes great and is not that expensive to prepare - reach for this book first.

I have purchased 4 copies of this book over the years - 2 for myself (1 of which I gave to my now ex) and 2 for friends. I don't look at it as a recipe book; it's more of a guide to ideas for quick meals for foodies. Mr Slater's writing style is engaging and I've come away with so many great additions to my repertoire. This is not a book for dinner party planning, but rather a book of suggestions when you're eating alone or with a friend and need something quick and tasty that's beyond the usual fare.

This book, a best-seller in Britain, is printed on inexpensive paper and lacks the lavish illustrations of most of Slater's books. It contains many good recipes that show that imaginative and nutritious cooking need not take a long time. Some of the recipes and ingredients are more to British tastes and may not cross the Atlantic well for everyone. A refreshing take on real food.

This recipe book is chock full of simple but delicious recipes. If you follow the directions exactly you will produce a tasty meal every time. I've given this book to several people, both new and skilled cooks, and the comments have all been extremely positive. Nigel Slater is a superb chef and writer - you can't go wrong with any of his books and they are an absolute delight to read!

Great, unique quick recipes that will have your mouth watering for more. Nigel Slater is, by far, one of the best chefs out there and this book really captures his essence for everyday cooking. They are unique enough without being over-the-top. A great way to impress someone with your skills in the kitchen!

Nigel Slater is one of Britain's most popular food writers and reading this book it is easy to see why. Who could dislike someone who writes "I love eating mash potato more than any other food in the world"?

This book is amazing. It's 30 minute meals but they are GOOD-things like pork au poive and lamb kofta. The recipes are all very well written and easy to follow. I would recommend this book to anyone, be it a novice or experienced cook.
