Great book but not just about Washington

I finally got around to reading this very large and thick book. Excellent book. Gives a fantastic perspective and and history of the indispensable man. But now i know why the book is so thick. It has a lot of history on the war. Some of it has nothing to do with Washington in particular. Very descriptive accounts of major battles which is all very interesting and I loved it ... but it had little to do with Washington other than he was commander at the time. It also has a lot of Washington during the war and things he did do and was present at, but there is a lot about other battles at which he was not present.

So it could have been shorter if they had talked only about Washington and his accomplishments alone, but still I love history and I found even those parts that were not directly about him to be great and insightful. All in all a great history book and biography of the greatest president or, for that matter, leader. If you want to know all about Washington and a lot about the Revolutionary War, this is the book for you.

Mr Beck introduced this book THE REAL GEORGE WASHINGTON on his show a couple months ago as well as a couple other history pieces of our founding fathers.
It sounded like a good summer read and am finding it to be a very good summer read. In these times of "Change" we need to know what we are changing from and
changing to. While what we are changing to is open to debate, this is a good
start to where we came from.

The book itself is well written, easy to read, well researched and documented,
with ledgable print and good illustrations. I have found no political leanings,
right or left. Just a clear concise portrait of the man and his times and in doing so a true picture of where we came from.

The books layout is the usual table of contents, Preface, Acknowledgements, followed by 613 pages of narrative and illastration, then 2 appendix - Personal views of Washington Thomas Jefferson and John Bernard. from there on is
part II - Timeless treasures of George Washington. then Notes and selected Bibliograph. The Real Thomas Jefferson and the Real Benjamin Franklin are laid
out in a symalar fashion and can easily be used as a reference guide as well as

A hero, portrayed as one.

This is book was a pleasant surprise. I recently finished reading His Excellency by Joseph J. Ellis and was let down, I don't recommend it. Ellis' work is sterile and cynical. It accentuates Washington's flaws, and makes a point of deconstructing one of our nations heroes. I wanted a book with all the information but without the agenda. I didn't want the author to stand out more than the subject. I found what I wanted in The real George Washington.
It's a large volume, over 900 pgs. (The last 300pgs or so are texts and excerpts written by Washington himself) but the book isn't unwieldy. It's thick, but not the dictionary-size I thought it would be, it's about 8 x5 inches, a perfect size for easy reading. The text is on the large side and there are paintings, maps and letters scattered throughout. It ended up being a very quick read.

I'm not a big reader, but purchased this book because of the vast number of sources used in compiling this book. What I found was a book that was entirely too interesting to use simply as a reference and ended up reading it in just a few short weeks. The book serves as a great history lesson on the life of Washington and includes several quotes and writings from Washington himself, as well as Jefferson, Adams and Hamilton just to name a few. The books follows Washington all the way from Birth to Death and highlights not only his greatest achievements, but also his many admitted shortcomings and errors thoughout his life. The book does wonder off of the subject of Washington at times for a whole chapter, but typically only to drive home a point in the chapters to follow. I highly recommend this book as well as the others in the American Classic Series. They truely offer a glimpse into the true founders of this country.

Ok, yeah, I bought this book on Beck's recommendation. If you hate Beck, does this mean you should not buy this book. Don't be a child. Forget Beck. Get this book. This book is about THE man that was absolutely destined to be our first president. Before all of that, he was a kid, a young man, a teenager, a very very important and KEY that unlocked the door to the founding and assention of the United States of America to the greatest country to ever inhabit God's earth.

If you want to get a wonderful picture of this truely excellent human being, George Washington, you must get this book. I have not been very interested in the Founders as much as right now, for very obvious reasons. This book is perfect for these times. I see that it is now backordered. Buy it, it's worth the wait.

Get the Ben Franlin and Thomas Jefferson editions in the series, too. You will not be dissappointed. Very, very good reading and very, very timely.

A simple and honest look at our first president. I first read the Real Thomas Jefferson, and really loved the presentation and layout of the book. Then I found out they had also written one about Benjamin Franklin and George Washington. I got the whole set and have loved finding out more about these Founding Fathers. There are some who think these are biased books and lean more towards to the Right with their bias. However I did not see that while reading these books. Everything they say is backed by documentation and there is very little room for personal beliefs. This is simple, easy to read, history. I must for any history buff or someone curious about the founding of this nation.
