The most remarkable aspect of this self-help book is the author's avowal that he's been there, too, while he stretches a rudimentary concept into a full-blown book. Baer's message is simple. People toiling away in lukewarm relationships are lacking "real love"-the ability to care unconditionally about the happiness of another person. "When we're unhappy, our misery is not the fault of our partner. Blaming that person is therefore foolish, wasteful and destructive, because no matter how much we demand or insist, he or she cannot make us happy." Ophthalmologist Baer (The Truth About Relationships) is not the first champion of the "you-get-out-of-it-what-you-put-into-it" school, and his suggestion that individuals are responsible for their own happiness is hardly novel. What distinguishes his map to the romantic holy grail from the others in its genre is Baer's admission of his own fallibility. He's been down and out, and there's something reassuring about his willingness to admit to failures as well as triumphs. As a result, the overall effect of this book is soothing, but readers shouldn't expect the truths found here to be anything new.

I am not married or in a relationship, but I feel this book changed how I will now interact with other people. I purchased the book and the audible. I listen while doing a long drive home. At some point in the book all I could do is cry. I realized I had sabotage so many of my relationships with friends, coworkers, family, and my son.

I no longer say I love you to the special people in my life. I say I love you unconditionally, and I don’t need or desire anything from you. I say it everyday to the people who count in my life, and if I speak or see the more than once a day I repeat.

This book is not what it seems. I found many cult and sexual misconduct allegations online that are highly concerning on cult education . com. I then found out that women he has coached have gone to the police with sexual assault accusations (the police report is public) and he recently settled in a civil suit against 2 women suing him for sexual assault.

Although much of the books content is based off of widely-accepted principles in psychology, there is a dangerous interspersing of indoctrination that can lead to dependency and emotional and physical abuse. The main premise of the book is that all people need to receive unconditional love from another person to be happy, making them constantly dependent upon this other person's love. Furthermore, it directly argues against the concept of self-love and self healing further leading to dependency.

I thought that I had a pretty good handle on unconditional love, but this book was an eye-opener! He identifies specific behaviors, called "getting and protecting behaviors" that contribute to imitation love. Some of these were no-brainers and I knew not to engage in them, such as "attacking". But others were not so obvious, and caused me to really look at my coping mechanisms for dealing with problems. I have recommended this book to dozens of people, and have had glowing reviews from every one of them. I rarely say a book is life-changing, but this one truly is. Highly recommended!

I've read a lot of books. I've had a lot of therapy. I picked up this book and within two or three pages I'd highlighted several passages. Dr. Baer has a way of tapping into a soft place in my heart and cultivating love and compassion. I've already bought copies for a couple of family members, it's that good. I'm writing this before finishing the book because it's affected me in such a profound way already. Reading it so far has been like being enveloped in a big hug.

Luckily, there is a website chalked FULL of information AND an AMAZING AMOUNT of support from TONS of people actively learning to live life differently. If you are tired of being unhappy, feeling alone, etc... and nothing else has worked, this may be what you've been looking for. It's changed my life and I have amazing, loving people in my life BECAUSE of these principles. I truly can't recommend these books enough.

A friend who cared enough about me shared this book with me when she saw I was struggling professionally with self doubt. Because of my trust in her I ordered as soon as I could without any more information. After placing my order Amazon hoped I'd also invest in the Kindle version and they offered the "Why wait till it arrives to start reading" option and I read the portion of the book available and knew I'd most certainly made the right decision and my book couldn't get here soon enough so I could finish reading it. I am not the least bit disappointed; it's some of the best money we've ever spent. The author's writing is simple and somewhat repetitive in a good way - to help solidify the concept in the readers' minds and also as they show up in different situations to show how simple it really is.

When I realized the author had multiple titles I suspected there was also a web site and I wasn't disappointed. Now, not only do I now have some GREAT books ... this one along with several more of the author's titles ... but now I'm tapping into a community of people drawn together by these simple concepts. I can't be more grateful to Greg Baer and for the way he's simplified age-old concepts into a language I can start to get my head around. I suggest Real Love to EVERYONE.

The only book you need...

I've read "everything" out there because "you don't know what you don't know". This book has the answer to all of life's problems. It changes the way you see everything. I'm ready to throw away my entire book library (seriously) because everything else is trying to address the symptoms. This book addresses the heart of all the problems. If you're unsure, lookup The Essentials of Real Love on YouTube (by Greg Baer). It's a great intro to this book.

Also, ignore the bad reviews. I almost skipped this book because of the slander I saw in the reviews. I'm so glad I decided to trust the recommendation of the person that suggested I read this.

Read the book. Just trust. That's what I did. I never knew this level of peace and happiness existed.
