I was surprised by this book by the time I finished the first chapter. First, it touched me personally, as a daughter. I'm finally able to put the nail-on-the-head about why I don't have childhood memories. After all, I have loving parents and siblings. I was raised in a 'perfect home'. With this new appreciation for what happened in my own childhood and how I responded over the years, I first and foremost have a new outlook on my upbringing. Then, after taking a few days to digest this shift in thinking, I read on. I was eager to learn what I can do to keep from doing the same thing to my children. I felt I was 80% there before reading the book and have to give myself credit. But that isn't enough. Now that I have a label and know the consequences, my ambition is to totally eliminate the reactionary ways I strip my children from their experience and create new habits that fill their soul with a sense of conscience. I'm so enthusiastic about putting new habits into place in my home that I would like to start a book club/chat group with others with this same interest. I would recommend this book to anyone. Not just parents.
Its an easy read (you feel like you are sitting across from him listening). Its a powerful book. It's a gift.

I really wanted to like this book. As soon as Dr. Dembo started talking about how ridiculously centered our culture is on winning at all costs, and the fact that we don't give our children any space to fail and learn, I found myself shaking my head in agreement. The trouble is, the author outlines the problem eloquently, and repeats it ad nauseum, but never really makes good on his claim to tell us what the alternative is, at least not in a realistic way. Yes, he does offer some examples from his own practice, but I suspect the half dozen examples or so are only the ones that had relatively happy endings. Yes, parents should be made aware of putting undue pressure on their children. However, the premium put on success extends throughout our culture, and it is not something parents alone can change. When his own daughter met the director of the kindergarten she would attend and asked the little girl, "are you ready to compete," Dembo was aghast. But what was the solution if his daughter wasn't prepared to compete, and found herself often skipped over for acknowledgment and praise when other students stepped up to the challenge? It may be unfortunate, but the fact is we are judged, and either rewarded or not rewarded in all aspects of our life, from school to work, for our ability to perform. I guess one could go and live on a deserted island (not something Dembo talks about), but short of that, I didn't get any real solutions from this. There were some good points about managing family culture and relations, so I still gave the book two stars, but the bigger question of how to succeed while ignoring the demands of a success oriented culture, the question Dembo at the start of the book attempted to try and address, went unanswered. I invested some seven hours listening to the Audible.Read more ›

I was very impressed reading Dr. Dembo's book. I strongly recommend that all of the vulnerable families out there - those with children--devise and implement their own "tailored" family plan, one that will, according to the doctor, foster "Responsive Parenting" and "create a family atmosphere where your child feels safe to succeed, fail, to give an honest effort, to express an opinion or just a feeling." There are other innovative particulars, but these two will establish a strong foundation from which to build. Years from now, you'll be grateful that you took this initiative. To comprehend the possible, daunting consequences of not doing so, you must read the book. Do what's best for your family.

Dr.Phil Dembo is a skilled therapist who has done excellent work with families for so many years. He has a clear understanding of individual and family dynamics and a straight forward, no non-sense approach helping people understand how to live more productively. He also has the skill to motivate them towards using the tools he provides in reaching their goals.
