I love Barbra Delinsky and she never fails to give me a good read. This one was no different. Albeit it read VERY fast and the ending was a bit predictable, I still felt that once again these characters were good friends of mine. I have only read about 4 or 5 of Ms. Delinsky's novels and I simply cannot wait to read more.

I found this book on a old dusty shelf and took a chance on this 1980's novel. This is a story about two stubborn strangers who find themselves on a island in Maine. The dialogue of the characters were real and fun. I would also suggest checking of the following authors, Ellen Byerrum, Elin Hilderbrand, and Marlys Millhiser. ENJOY!

The best of the three books in the series. Reads a bit like a first draft but the story line and characters do fit. Would have liked more detail about the "Project" that the story was centered on. The series ran out of steam about mid-way thru the second book........ The "Romance" focus became a bit fuzzy and less interesting.........

Having read some of Barbara's really good works, like Coast Road, Three Wishes, Lake News, and Escape, I thought all of her books would be the same quality. This book is more on par with a Harlequin or Silhouette romance. There are no secondary stories going on, no interesting supporting characters. The writing style is just average. There is a very descriptive sex scene, not her usual style. This is a rereleased '80's romance. It has not been updated, except perhaps the cover, (which shows a woman standing on two healthy legs when the heroine in this book is in a full length leg cast.) The heroine wears leg warmers and listens to cassettes. She feels that the hero won't like her body because it is too athletic and doesn't return to work so that she can be his "helpmate." In short this is a boring book where two characters who hate each other fall in inexplicably into bed together.

I did not really enjoy this book. I normally like books by ms. delinsky but this one was just so predictable. The plot was rather bland and you knew the outcome before the third chapter. I will not be ordering the rest of the trilogy. Book one was enough for me

Recuperating from her broken leg, Deirdre Joyce, owner of a dance/exercise emporium and next in line to run Joyce Enterprises, meets Neil Hersey, black-balled lawyer, at the troublesome, matchmaking Victoria Lesser's island refuge. They bicker, and slowly over a three day period fall in lust, then love with each other for their remaining two week, reality escape. They return to Providence to run her family business.
But now married and pregnant, Deirdre feels like she is losing herself, and questions Neil's motives, which gives him pause to reexamine their relationship. They say the magic words,"I love you!", and all is well. Really?!?!

This was novel was read out of order, and it was the best of the trio, receiving only 2.5***** / 5 stars. The plot, characters, and the dangerous romantic, Victoria, were, again, unfulfilling and difficult to endure for long time spans. Victoria by her own admissions knew Neil on and off for over a three years period, yet she marooned a defenseless, crutch-wielding woman on an island with this stranger for two weeks.
My CDO (OCD), has won out: the series has been read, and my final summation on this trilogy is... " Arggghhhh!" 6/29/16

I love this Trilogy - I have the original books in print - but why why why, Amazon, can't you sell the full trilogy as a set which is much easier for reading on a Kindle? And would make more sense. Plus, this is an old tale - it's not in any way new - it must be around 25 years old now. So great story if you haven't read it already - but won't be buying it again until it's available as a trilogy.

This is, I believe, what's known as a "cabin romance."

Deirdre Joyce is an aerobics instructor, but she's broken her leg. Now, not only is her career in jeopardy, but her family sees it as the perfect time to increase the pressure on her to take her place in the family business--but she's been there, done that, and doesn't want to go there again. So she turns to a friend and asks for the loan of her remote island cabin to hide out and heal.

Neil Hersey is a corporate lawyer, but when he discovers shady dealings, he doesn't get the gratitude he might have expected. Instead, he loses his job, and rumors are started that he'd been the criminal. So he turns to a friend and asks for the loan of her remote island cabin to hide out and decide what to do now.

Needless to say, it's the same friend, and she hasn't told either of them about the other.

I had a little trouble warming up to Deirdre initially--she was needlessly rude to Neil and prone to cutting off her nose to spite her face--angrily refusing help when she obviously needed it. Neil was a bit pitiful initially, but he perked up once he met Deirdre and had a goal. The solution to their problems was clever, and well-done.

Overall, The Real Thing is a sweet story, about two people who end up being just what the other needs.
