While “The Real Thing” will always be known as ‘that album that spawned “Epic”’ it is far more. And for those who know of this release only because of “Epic” (a fun rap rock track) and think that that’s all this album really has to offer…you’re way off. This is a great album and stands the test of time. These guys put out what would be classified a metal album but it’s so much more, experimental and playing around within the heavier sounds of the genre but it does not conform to them. Simply put there’s real good music here, and lots of it. It also doesn’t lean nearly as heavily on the rap-rock formula of the song “Epic” and if anything uses that approach sparingly. Truth is that I never checked this album out and only picked it up in a bargain bin because I wondered what more the album had to it but expected a lot more of “Epic” sounding songs. I got so much more and like many if not most of these songs better than the big hit. The title track is a treat and takes its time to build and destroy. “Surprise! You’re Dead!” has great acoustic underpinnings that I didn’t even pick up on until my seventh or eighth listen and made that song so much better than it already was. The cover to Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” fits like a glove on this inclusive, and they own it. The instrumental “Woodpecker From Mars” is perhaps my favorite track (exciting bass work and a mesmerizing middle eastern synth line dominate before cascading buzzsaw guitar sustains power in), satisfying the hard but also playful adventurous notes that dot this disc. The CD was worth the full price admission. If I had only known earlier.
