What Is It? The Birth Of A Late 80's Classic Remastered!

Let's face it, back in 1989 you could not escape the power of Faith No More's song "Epic". Before Nu-Metal's rap/rock hybrids, the song Epic birthed this style, with a uniqueness that the next generation could never truly master. But what a lot of casual fans didn't experience was that "The Real Thing" was an amazing record that had so much more than just simply Epic. With then new lead vocalist, and Mr. Bungle frontman, Mike Patton now at the microphone, his higher range than former vocalist Chuck Mosley brought up the band as a whole rather than sounding like a surf-punk outfit that they were known for. This was the album that defined them and made them MTV superstars. This 2015 Deluxe 2CD edition remasters all 11 original tracks and adds a second disc of the B-Sides, both of live & studio outtakes, of this era, including one of my favorite FMN tracks "Cowboy Song", which should have NEVER been left off in the first place. Remastering is at a proper volume without crushing peaks, and you have never heard these B-Sides as good as this ever. While most FMN fans would say the followup " Angel Dust " is their masterpiece (me included), it was "The Real Thing" that hooked us in the first place. The beginning of Metal's growth in the 90's, this is one album that everyone should experience. It should be noted that 5 of their albums have recently been given the same 2CD remastering treatment as "TRT", but newbies should start right here. You want it all, but you can't have it...well, NOW you can with this great 2CD re-release!

FINALLY--BUT WAIT!!!

This review is based on the assumption that you are already familiar with the previous release of this CD.

Well at long last we get (almost) all the B-sides and live tracks (not to mention the RADIO edit of EPIC) from the "The Real Thing" era all in one place without having to amass a conglomeration of import and rarity versions. It even has "The Grade" and "The Cowboy Song" from the "Live at the Brixton Academy" CD but neglects "The Perfect Crime" from the "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey" soundtrack. Still, given all the "greatest hits" and "best of" albums, you would think that SOMEONE would have thought of this sooner. Alas, it's here now.

Here is the problem: the sound quality for the additional tracks is sub-par. I'm not an audiophile and even I can tell it's not quite right. This is especially apparent for "From Out of Nowhere". Maybe they were recorded this way? Who knows. It's a shame that all this work was put into gathering all these songs together without any decent consideration for the sound quality.

The only other complaint that I have is that it's yet another cardboard cover glued to weak plastic casings. CAN WE STOP IT WITH THIS???? If someone is going to go to the trouble of buying this in CD format, then could we pleases do them the courtesy of keeping with a decent case? At least with the old fashioned ones, you could still by replacement cases if they broke. This trend is frankly pointless.

Oh well.

GREAT music...5 weeks+ still no CD though

Lets just put this up front...I LOVE Mike Pattons work. I love it so much I have patiently waited for "The Real Thing" CD since Sept29th...with NO delivery date slotted yet. I was notified around the time I got the other items shipped (more FNM, Tomahawk, Mr. Bungle CD's) that this particular one was back ordered. I was notified about 10 days ago...that it was still back ordered and gave me the option to cancel. Which I DID NOT DO...I WANT the CD whenever it comes. Anyway...I actually went and bought a MP3 player...just so I could download the songs on this CD...cause I really couldn't stand it any longer!! I don't care...I still want the CD.

I do believe Mike Pattons work for the most part...is just too good to not have a "hard copy" in my library even if it can be downloaded. I appreciate the music now more than ever and to be honest...it just grows on you. The more I listen to it...the more I can hear just how unique it is in the history of "rock" or "metal" or whatever label you give it. Worth the price of a CD, many weeks of a back order (who knows when it will ever come?) AND 11 MP3 downloads. And that's no bull.

I actually heard FNM first when my teenager son had a CD way back when. (I listened to his music BEFORE outright censoring just because I hated being censored with my music in the 60's-70's). He quickly went off to music his Mom wouldn't like ;-)...but I remembered the music and the voice. A few years back...I decided to find out just who this Mike Patton was...and got an education. If I am going to spend money on music...I want it to be interesting music...and THIS is interesting...non predictable music and I Like it.

The record was clean, but with all records I buy, new or old I cleaned it. It played clean no skips at all. It did have a few minor scuffs which seems to be a trend, and I believe it's mostly records pressed at The Record Industry plant that had an issue as every one I own that came from that plant had some scuff on it, up side, none are audible. And this one didn't, but others I own from the same plant had label issues like the label was torn while the record was being pressed.

The sound quality was decent. As is most I own from Music on Vinyl.

The original CD release of this album was appalling, thin, weak and lacking punch, a very poor representation of this seminal album. The remaster corrects this, delivering a very well balanced mix that shows the great talent and freshness that Faith No More brought to the rock world at their peak. The second disc collects some odds and ends that are all worthwhile, though it's a shame the classic Perfect Crime from Bill & Ted is not included (Sweet Emotion, an early, rougher version with different lyrics is).

It's a shame we've had to wait 25 years for justice to be done to the album on CD (the original vinyl was fine... it sounded like THIS in fact), which has probably cost FNM the recognition they deserve amongst younger generations as the band that reinvented and reinvigorated "Heavy Metal", opening it up to a wider audience and creating the space in which Nirvana, Soundgarden, NIN etc could grow. Hopefully a new generation of fans will discover it now.

It took me time to get into Faith No More, I remember when I was a kid watching MTV (Before internet and YouTube, yes?), waiting for some metal songs and there was ‘Epic’ aired very frequently but every time I watched it I didn’t like it, not sure if because the video clip was weird, Mike Patton’s funny dances (although I liked his voice) or it reminded me Red Hot Chili Peppers (Not that I have a problem with that band but not my type), so I ignored them. Also they were labeled as alternative, funk and rap which I refused to accept before I got open minded.
Everything has changed when I was listening to a great band called Mordred, a thrash metal band (as a thrash huge fan who tried to explore some underground and overlooked albums) with funk influence.
On Mordred’s album called ‘Fool’s Game’ (Highly recommended!) I just been amazed, also the vocalist Scott Holderby has similar vocals to Mike Patton so what a bonus, I really like it and that is what gave me the curiosity to check back Faith No More and this album ‘The Real Thing’.
I have to say, I do not like all the songs in here, but despite of the album being a bit long it is still listenable and I do like the most of it, I still have a problem with ‘Epic’ for example.
What I do like in here mostly is the title track ‘The Real Thing’, this is a brilliant track that blew me away that I can’t even describe, also we get the aggressive side of Mike Patton which I like it more. This song is long and still I can listen to it in loops and getting excited every time I hear it.
Another top tracks worth mention: ‘Surprise! You’re Dead’, ‘The Morning After’ and ‘Falling to Pieces’.
The instrumental track ‘Woodpecker from Mars’ is a great example for what the band members are capable of without the vocals, a great track that never get tired.
The cover ‘War Pigs’ for Black Sabbath is a brilliant cover, very heavy and it is easily could be a Faith No More song.
So, my conclusion is to never judge a book by its cover, ignore the tags of what is heavy and what is not, listen to an album, you might like it or not but give it a try.
In this case, even when I still have problem with ‘Epic’ I love the album and it is proudly sitting in my metal collection.

Missing two original release tracks

Have been a massive FNM fan since they started in the 80s. Currently going through my vinyl revival age and replacing missed records. Couldn't wait to get my hands on this rerelease. BUT, and this is a MASSIVE BUT for me, both War Pigs (Black Sabbath cover) and Edge of the World are missing from the vinyl!!!! It's a game changer - those tracks were phenomenal. If you want to listen to the original experience - buy the CD. Such a shame to miss these tracks off.

Musically a fantastic album however, I didn't enjoy the remastering of this album compared to the original (much less dynamic range which kills the bass for me) and the bonus material is not great. Die-hard FNM fans might want it for their collection, but the original is better on my setup (Chord Mojo).
