The story started to unravel the moment their lives intersected again. The reason for this is their history. It really isn’t dealt with. Secrets are dropped like breadcrumbs, but they are left on the forest floor. The author doesn’t have the characters pick them up and explore any of their implications.
When Turner or Naomi make major changes to their personalities or lives, the reader is told when the character proclaims it. Turner decided to abandon his rocker ways to be a family man. Yes people can change, but why? Naomi gives a reason. But the reader should be shown Turner working through this. Naomi doesn’t really move forward at all. She stays stagnant. Showing how the characters evolve would not have taken away from the ugly portrayal the author was going for. It would have only enhanced the theme the author wanted to portray.
Heavy topics are introduced but not dealt with. This could be contributed to the “grit” or rough aspect of the characters, but it has the opposite outcome. Instead, the characters go from three dimensional to flat. It would have only taken a few a pages to ensure that these characters jumped off the pages instead of lying within them, flat.
I am smitten!!!
I finished this with a smile and rushed to buy the next...in 3 days I am to the 5th book...
GIRL, I LOVE YOUR TWISTED MIND!!!
This is not your average love story because let's face it, real love is anything but pretty..it's REAL UGLY!!!!
This was like a walk down memory lane (I lived fast, tried to leave that pretty corpse). AHHHH, my twenties came alive in your pages!!! Thank you..thank you..thank you! I'll try to continue to review but right now I am completely obsessed with your characters and I need to let it all sink in, destroy my soul, and raise me from my misery!!!
YOU ARE A KEEPER!!!!!
This is the first book i the Hard Rock Roots series. It is also the very first book of C.M. Stunich’s that I have read. I have every book in this series and a few other books of hers; I just hadn’t picked them up yet. Why? I keep asking myself why I hadn’t read any of them yet!
This book had me on the edge of my seat. Love. Hate. Confusion. Suspense. Murder. Drugs. My mind was going in circles. How can there be so much in one book? And I loved every single word of it!
I will admit, I did struggle a little bit for a short time. I was having a hard time with the drug usage. But that didn’t last long. It’s part of the story. Without it, the story would be lacking.
So now I sit here. I need to find the words to convince why you should read this book. But how do I do that? I can’t go into the book without giving you a play-by-play of the whole book. If I did that, then you wouldn’t need to read the book. So, all I can say is that this is one damned great book…. So just read it!
Calling Naomi's life messed up would be the understatement of the year. All the sh!t that happened in her life made her close up - she's cold, stopped loving herself or others, and isn't afraid about anything and stands her ground. The only emotion she's having is hate; hate toward one person. The person she used to look up to, the person she admired and loved, the person that saved her once - Turner. But even he let her down and hurt her; hurt her so deeply that hate is the only emotion she's willing to allow.
Naomi and Turner share one love, one passion, and that's music. Both are in rock bands; while Turner is the lead singer in his band, Naomi prefers to stay in the backgroud as guitarist. As it wouldn't be enough to constantly hear Turner's band in the news and radio -his voice a reminder about their painful past- now Naomi's band is on tour with his - for damn long 6month. She's determind not to beg down when she sees Turner; Turner who probably doesn't even remember her or what happened 6 yrs ago. But Noami does and Turner sooner than later finds out why Noami is the only person that doesn't show him repsect.
Turner is a born rock star: sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll. He's full of tattoos and just yummy to look at. Every night after his gigs he has another chick. He doesn't care and just enjoys his life. Yeah he's sexy and he knows it - his arrogance pisses off a lot of people, including Naomi! But when Turner wakes up after a trashed night, not knowing where he is and tries to go back to his own tour bus he notices someone sleeping... Naomi. She's beautiful but soon Turner learns that she's unlike any other chick and she's every right to hate... But Turner wouldn't be Turner if he gives up sooo easily.
I've to say I was very eager to read Real Ugly and liked it a lot, but didn't love it though. The story is very confusing at the beginning cause the author mentions many side characters and at a certain point I got lost. A bit more introductions would have been nice but I cought up on them eventually. Throughout the story I could feel the confusing mess that Naomi is, why she hated him so bad but also I got a bit irritated that she was sooo over the top. I mean, yeah you can hate someone but for christs sake, he had no idea and sometimes she just annoyed me with her behavior...Also, Naomi was a bit too violent for me as a woman, Turner didn't deserve everything she did. In general, I noticed the frustration in her, she was mad against everything and everyone and I felt sorry for her.
I liked that this book was written in dual POV, I love being in a guys head, and enjoyed Turner's POV a lot better. Sometimes the writing was a bit off so that's also a the reason for my rating. But oh my, this book ended with a MAJOR cliffhanger and I'll def read Get Bent - I need to KNOW HOW IT CONTINUES.
I do recommend this book if you don't mind sexual contents and harsh language. It's def a 18+ book.
