5.0 out of 5 stars Core Skills + Layer Up = Everything you need to start
By ShardsOfBlue on January 11, 2018
Very happy with this kit as a follow-on to the previous one, [[ASIN:B00NTMC49G Reaper Miniatures 08906 Learn To Paint Bones Kit]]. With both of these kits, you get a grasp of all the basic skills needed to paint miniatures, some good starter brushes, and a nice set of paints. Exactly what I was hoping for!

The kits don't include: information about priming (Bones minis don't technically need to be primed, so the kits don't teach you how), varnishing, or basing (aka attaching your minis to bases and decorating those bases).

The step-by-step tutorials are what sold me on these, and they didn't disappoint. Attached are pics of the minis I painted from both kits (minus the pirate because I'm still working on him), using only the tools and instructions included. These are the first minis I've ever painted.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic kit for anyone looking to improve their miniature painting skills
By sgmustadio on January 26, 2021
Thanks to the pandemic, I needed a non-social hobby (outside of video games) to keep me entertained in the evenings. I had done some mini painting many years ago (mostly Warhammer 40K), but I had never moved past the “washing” and “drybrushing” stage. I saw this kit and knew it would be exactly what I needed to get back into the hobby.

The kit is fantastic, as it includes everything you need to get started: paint brushes, miniatures, paints, and most importantly, instructions. The instruction guide is extremely well-written and includes photos and diagrams along with step-by-step descriptions of how to mix paints. It walks you through the process of achieving a nice blend through the “layering” technique.

If you are just starting out with painting miniatures, I recommend tackling Reaper’s “Core Skill” kit first before attempting the “Layer Up” kit: https://www.amazon.com/Reaper-Miniatures-08906-Learn-Paint/dp/B00NTMC49G/ref=sr_1_1

The Reaper community and forum is amazingly friendly. I had a few questions while working through the guide, and a number of folks (including the author!) jumped in to help me out.

Please note that I deviated from the guide in a few areas. In October, 2020, I attended Reaper’s virtual convention, where I picked up some extra skills and wanted to try them out. Namely, I created more interesting bases for the figures and attempted some non-metallic metal (NMM) effects on the gnome and pirate’s dagger and sword.

Pros:
- Everything you need to get started painting the minis
- Instructions are very well-written and walk you through the layering process, step-by-step
- The Reaper MSP paints are great and have a good consistency for using straight out of the bottle or with some thinning
- You don’t need to prime the minis
Diverse set of humanoid figures to practice layering different colors (skin tones are hard!)

Cons (not enough to remove a star--just a few things you should be aware of):
- The brushes are the weakest point of the kit. The bristles started to splay after one mini with little hope of fixing them. Unless you’re willing to shell out for a Kolinsky sable brush, I recommend picking up the Army Painter D&D official “Nolzurs Marvelous” brush set (https://www.amazon.com/Army-Painter-Dungeons-Official-Marvelous/dp/B07DWMMLZT/ref=sr_1_2). This is the best inexpensive synthetic set I’ve used so far.
- The Reaper Bones material (the plastic used in the miniatures) is super weird and requires some fiddling to look right and hold paint (hint: don’t thin your paint for the first coat).

The instruction guide talks about cleaning the Bones material some prior to painting, but I recommend reading a few guides on how to bend them into shape to avoid the “droopy sword” look that plagues many Bones figures. It includes dunking the mini in boiling water for 5-10 seconds and then plunging it into an ice bath while holding the offending appendage straight.
