I want to start by saying I’ve never painted a mini or anything else in my life. I’m the ultimate novice/newbie. As a proud owner of the new board game Gloomhaven, I was hoping to learn to paint the included game minis.
The kit comes with a nice box with plenty of room to add new paints. It comes with only enough paint really to deal with the miniatures included. It’s great to learn from, but won’t hold you over if you want to get into more advance painting.
The brushes included seem pretty cheap. Better than Walmart ones for sure, but I paid about 14 bucks for a good one.
The instructions really helped me as a complete novice. It got really specific about how many drops of water when thinning your paints into washes. It’s also great to start off the a very basic skeleton and work your way up to more complex figures.
With a mix of some tips from youtubers, I didn’t sway too much from the instructions listed in the book. One major difference was I decided to prime my minis before painting.
All in all I’m happy with the results. I did not thin my paints nearly enough. I didn’t dab my brush before applying the wash and it went on too heavy. My results might look bad, but I realize my errors and hope to improve. I’m going to keep these minis as they are as a reminder of how I started. I had a blast painting these guys and look forward to doing many more.
TL;DR. New painter who is very impressed with just how much I learned with this learn to paint kit.
I’ve attached a few photos to show my results
