Charming Bastard: I’ve always wanted to know Boonie and Darcy’s story, and now I do. Darcy is the epitome of a biker’s Old Lady and she’s the one that shows Marie what it really means to be a biker’s Old Lady. It was nothing like what I imagined, but it was definitely sweet. It’s no surprise Boonie started out life as a badass. Darcy had a rough row to hoe. Loved this peek into how these two favorites of mine became a couple, even if it did involve eating worms.
Skunked: I’ll take any glimpse of Horse I can get. I have a freaking huge BBF crush on that man. I hear his name and I go into a Horse fog……..mmmmmm. It was cute, it was funny, Horse as usual acted like an huge jerk then made up for it, and poor Ariel got put through the wringer. My only complaint was I needed some Horse action and as cute as it was, it was missing that.
Sugar and Spice: The prequel to Melanie and Painter’s story was mainly their POV’s of their parts in Reaper’s Fall. It was interesting to see where Melanie’s headspace was at while Picnic and London were doing their thing. Painter’s treatment of Melanie earned him some points back after screwing up so bad with Em. I can’t wait to dig into their story in November.
Overall, a quick read that was a nice distraction while I wait. Can’t say there was a lot of substance here, except for Boonie and Darcy’s story, but all the cuteness and insight gave me a Reapers fix that hit just the right spot. Thank you, JW. I needed that.
Spice’s Rating: 4 Happy Stars
We get a glimpse into Boonie and Darcy's history and it is both intense and a bit of a train wreck. As they put it, every time they start to make some progress and find some time together, everything goes to crap and blows up around them - or to use Boonie's words, they are normality - challenged, and that certainly fits.
Skunked had me simultaneously laughing and groaning in empathy because I have experienced the gag - inducing "fun" of cleaning a skunked dog before. Fortunately I didn't have to contend with a big lug like Horse at the same time as Marie struggled to relay some important information to him.
Finally, Painter and Melanie get their own prequel novella to set the stage for Reapers Fall, the full length novel that will be their story releasing in November. Sugar and Spice is told in Mel's POV and gives us her view of some of the events that happened in Reapers Stand.
This is a great little collection of extras that is well worth the 99 pennies to me!
So all in all, it wasn't a total waste, but this could've been awesome as a free read for fans of the series, instead of having to pay for it. I have no idea what I thought this would be, but not what I got. I am looking forward to the next book though. And I am really hoping to see a book on Bolt and Maggs- I really want to know how they got out of the mess they were in in book 4.
