Another big shift in the story is that it gets more Sci-Fi. With the connection to the author’s other LitRPG Sci-Fi series, The Phantom Server, becoming bigger and more apparent, that makes sense. But since this series started out as a fantasy story, it may be a bit jarring to read about.
Still, the story is entertaining. It resolves just about every story thread I can think of. All the questions you may have had about things are answered: Where did the reapers come from? What’s happening with the real world? What the neuro enhancing devices are? What’s the connection to the Phantom Server? You get answers, though some of those explanations may feel a bit rushed.
There’s plenty of action and adventure in the story as the guild and the remnants of the human players try to defend themselves from the reapers that can kill them in game and in real life, permanently.
The ending wraps things up well enough to end the series but also leaves an opportunity for more story if the author wants to continue later.
Overall, I had a good time reading it.

Things made more sense in this book and plugged some holes from the second book. However there are still a few plot lines left dangling.
I was interested in the ship's in the cove, and even though the MC was too, it was never explored.
The ending seemed sudden to me. Almost like the author had plans for more but had to close out the project for some reason.
Even though the end was sudden it wasn't sloppy.
I could easily recommend this book.
"May you live in interesting times" is a blessing and curse that follows many a protagonist. Things had finally begun to settle down at Rion Castle, home of the "Black Mantises" clan. Free from the threat of financial failure, the clan was in a good position to rebuild the castle, while building their treasury and roster. Naturally, fate had other plans. While looking for someone who would help expand the clan's martial prowess, the clan had located the last place the Founders themselves had held within the bounds of Crystal Sphere. Seeking a moment to breathe after all of the excitement that had started way back when an oversized frog was a reason for concern, Alex and Enea returned to the Lost Island. There they could tease out some of the secrets of their castle, which had previously housed the final devotees of the Founders. This trip did not proceed as planned. Overwhelmed by the surge of information they had tried to process, the two were saved through the intervention of Mr. Borisov, the man who had recruited Alex as a test subject of the neuroimplant. Having put Alex and Enea into a medically induced coma, our heroes were saved from thinking themselves to death as they processed not the Founders' fictional magic, but the Founders' actual science. Crystal Sphere had always been a game, but the best loot was never the latest enchanted gear. It was the potential to advance the Phantom Server project.
Unfortunately for Alex and Enea, Rome was not built in a day, and the Founder's code likewise took an extended period of time for their neuroimplants to handle. Worse, there is a "ghost in the machine" that has been rising in power, creating an unofficial faction of NPCs called "Reapers." Furious with the abuse and death they suffered at the hands of the player base, the NPCs set out to terminate them, devouring the players' hopes and fears as they do so. Much worse, something has happened to the "pale blue dot," making reality vastly more dangerous. One person cannot hope to save the Crystal Sphere, but what about one clan?
"The Reapers" provides an additional serving of the action, worldbuilding, hints of romance, and bits of mystery we received in "The Curse of Rion Castle," the action having more weight now that we are aware of the consequences for failure. To help even things out, the consequences for success also have more weight, now that they are more than another shiny drop item. The timeskip we experience between "The Curse of Rion Castle" and "The Reapers" was a bit jarring, but understanding within the context of the universe these books belong to. Many threads were resolved in a satisfying manner, leaving one major question in their wake: how the heck did the former Paladin mercenary Zander reach level 430 by the prologue of Edge of Reality (Phantom Server: Book #1) LitRPG series?!
