Jenn picks up and moves her life after the sudden death of her husband and her daughter's departure for college. Living in the mountains of Colorado and being a journalist had always been her dream but her unexpected pregnancy at eighteen changed her reality. Moving to Colorado, she was hired on by the local paper and also pinged the radar of every man in Gunnison. Unfortunately, she'd also caught the eye of a killer. As the body count rose, so did her interaction with the very sexy sheriff, Jack Gunnison.
A true alpha male in every sense of the word, he is attracted to Jenn upon their first meeting, and that leads him to want to protect her. The banter between the couple is witty, fun, and sexy. She's the first woman he's ever been challenged by. She doesn't just take his bossy tendencies, she fights back and more than anything, she understands his job isn't nine to five and doesn't want to change him. The man has had his choice of women since high school and when he sets his sights on Jenn, all hell breaks loose, personally and professionally.
I loved the action in the story, the quirky characters found in the small town, the chemistry between the couple, the off the charts sexy scenes, and following the breadcrumbs. Ms. Smith set up several red herrings to lead the reader to think someone else was the killer and when the actual person is revealed it was a surprise. And just when you think there is an HEA in the wings Ms. Smith throws in more action. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
If you're looking to have your emotions toyed with, you'll not be disappointed in picking up this read. The suspense had me riveted and clinging to my seat, the banter between Jack and Jenn had me laughing. If you love a good Alpha, Jack's your man. Better yet, if you love a take-no-shit heroine who tells you like it is, Jenn's your girl. These two will have you laughing, crying, feeling frustrated one moment, and then filled with elation the next. I absolutely loved the relationship Jenn has with her daughter, and the support the young woman bestows upon her mother to finally move forward in life and find her "happy".
Will I be picking up the next in this series? I'd be stupid not to and even crazier not to check out Ms. Smith's other selections as well.
>I am an independent reviewer. This is the first book in the Reason series and ends with an HEA. I love how this story features more mature characters. Jennifer is a widow who moves to the mountains for a fresh start. With her daughter, Bailey in college, she is free to become the reporter she has always dreamed of. Jack, the super alpha sheriff, has to take awhile to get over his dislike of reporters, but eventually falls for Jenn.
>This story has it all, suspense, romance, and the most alpha man in existence. Jack is the sexiest man ever. Jenn must be very assured of her hold on him, as he serial dated everyone in the county. There are quite a few humorous scenes between Jack and his ex's. Jenn just fights back, but doesn't let jealousy overtake her.
>The stalker aspect of the story wasn't easy to figure out. The author misdirected the reader and kept everyone guessing. I love the scenes with Jack and Jenn. The epilogue was such an unexpected surprise. Loved, loved, loved this book.
>This story is appropriate for an adult audience. I am giving this series 5 stars.
The only draw backs were the way the dual POV was handled, which in the beginning was very confusing, and wasn't really "easy" even after getting the cadence of them down. And then the editing... *sigh* I hate picking on editing, but there were quite a few issues & at various points it did take me out of the story. Once back IN the story, not a problem, but ... it bothered me enough that I needed to mention it, since I think these two things messed w/ my enjoyment just enough for this to not be a 5 star read.
BUT, because I really did love the story & pacing A LOT, I'd say it's more 4.75 stars than 4, so ... *grin* I highly encourage you to give it a shot & enjoy! : )
