Editorial Reviews

Review

"This is an outstanding collection of essays and this textbook is a very good instance of its kind. There are other books similar to it on the market, but this is a very good one." -- Dr. Matthew Talbert, West Virginia University

"The market for introduction to philosophy textbooks is crowded, but Reason and Responsibility strikes me as a high-quality textbook that competes well with the Perry/Bratman/Fischer reader." -- Dr. Christopher Hom, Texas Tech University

About the Author

Joel Feinberg (Professor Emeritus, late of University of Arizona) was widely recognized as one of America's leading political and social philosophers. Acclaimed both for his ground-breaking scholarship and his exemplary teaching skills, Feinberg published widely on topics such as individual rights, legal theory, capital punishment, the treatment of the mentally ill, civil disobedience, and environmental ethics. Before joining the University of Arizona faculty, he taught at Brown, Princeton, and Rockefeller universities. Feinberg was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in 1987-88 to work in Japan and served as chairman of the National Board of Officers in the American Philosophical Association in the mid-1980s. Some of the royalties from Reason and Responsibility have been used to establish the Regents Professor Joel Feinberg Dissertation Fellowship in Philosophy at the University of Arizona.

Russ Shafer-Landau received his Ph.D. from the University of Arizona and currently teaches at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he focuses on ethical theory and philosophy of the law. He is the author of THE FUNDAMENTALS OF ETHICS; MORAL REALISM; A DEFENCE; AND WHATEVER HAPPENED TO GOOD AND EVIL? He also serves as series editor for Oxford Studies in Metaethics.

The philosophy department in which I teach recently switched its textbook for introduction to philosophy to "Reason and Responsibility," edited by Feinberg and Shafer-Landau. The decision was a wise one. There are a lot of introductory philosophy texts on the market. A few of them are bad. Most are adequate. And there are several that are excellent. This is one of them.

All the major areas of philosophy are covered--ethics, epistemology, metaphysics, and philosophy of religion, among others. The selections are balanced, with all major positions on the various topics being represented. Moreover, there is a good blend of classical and contemporary readings on the issues. Each unit begins with an introduction by the editors of the text. Although relatively short, these introductions provide a helpful background to the issues being discussed and serve to give the student an overview of the issues he or she will encounter. While many of the anthologized articles take work to understand (this is philosophy, after all), none of them are beyond the ability of the student to understand.

This book has been a pleasure to use and is an excellent supplement to my classroom presentations. I am glad the department adopted it.

I might mention that a subsequent edition is available as of the beginning of 2013. But because we are still using the 2010 edition and have not yet seen the new edition, I cannot comment on it. However, as far as I know, the differences with the present edition are minor, and so it is likely that what I have said about the present edition applies to the new edition as well.

MY FAVORITE BOOK OF 2016----LOTS OF ABSTRACT NEAT ARGUMENTS THAT LEAVE THE SIMPLE AND MUNDANE SUDDENLY SEEMING ABSTRACT, COMPLEX AND ESCAPING ANY SIMPLE APPLICATION OF "PASSIVE" LOGIC THAT SEEMED SO EASY TO PRACTICE BEFORE YOU READING THE FIRST ENCOUNTER.....:) IT'S A MASTERPIECE!!!

I bought the kindle edition because this book was assigned as a textbook for my Philosophy class. When I downloaded and opened it up I noticed that half the readings that were assigned to me were actually not in the book at all, instead there was "Text not available due to copyright restrictions" typed up all over dozens of pages.
I think Amazon should at least warn us about this before claiming that an entire book, at almost the same price as the hard copy, is available for digital download.
Needless to say, I am disappointed.

The book itself, however, is a good read, the selected articles are thought provoking and will leave you pondering about the ideas presented for days to come. One of my favorite pieces is John Pollock's "A Brain in a Vat"... too bad that it was also missing from the kindle edition.

I really didn't expect this from a company that I thought to be so reliable and thus (in my opinion and reasoning) gaining huge popularity - but i didn't know that this could happen and, moreover, I didn't know that I didn't know that this could happen.
I just couldn't resist lol

"Reason and Responsibility," the anthology by Joel Feinberg and Russ Shafer-Landau, is now in its 15th edition, a testimony to its staying power and its excellence as an introductory text. All the major areas of philosophy are covered, and the selections are balanced, with fair representation of the various positions on each of the issues. Moreover, there is a good blend of classical and contemporary readings. Each unit begins with an introduction by the editors that provides a helpful background to the issue under discussion and serves to give the student an overview of the issue. While many of the anthologized articles take work to understand , none of them are beyond the ability of the average student.

"Text not available due to copyright restrictions" is the message you get for half the articles in the book. If the publisher is going to do half a job as poorly as this, they should at least have the decency to lower the price, or at least put a warning on the page, letting the customer know *which* articles are missing.

Holy cheeze-whip! Inspired more than just philosophy, I spent the last 3 weeks of my life restructuring the very framework that I had built my vision of reality upon.

The book came within two weeks, just like it said. The book was in good condition, just like it said. Most importantly, it was cheap! I'm very happy with my purchase.
