Editorial Reviews

Review

"Rebel Cowboy is a beautifully crafted romance... The end of the story is just perfect. It's believable, and exactly right for these characters, especially since their journey to this point was rocky at best. I loved this book and look forward to more books in this series as well as other stories by Nicole Helm." - USA Today Happily Ever After

"Helm delves into the depths of her characters' emotions, revealing their foibles and making them incredibly human. With plenty of sexual tension and scintillating love scenes, this romance is a true page-turner. " - Publishers Weekly

"REBEL COWBOY is recommended for anyone who likes slow burn emotional stories with hot sex, anyone who likes tales of folks bringing new life to one another and anyone who gets a kick out of alpacas." - Fresh Fiction

"Rebel Cowboy is a sweet and sexy introduction to the Big Sky Cowboys series." - Book Reviews and More

"I loved this book and look forward to more books in this series as well as other stories by Nicole Helm." - USA Today HEA

My Review:
This is the first book in a new series set in Montana ranch country. Dan is an NHL hockey player who has choked two years in a row in the NHL playoffs. Choked to the point that he's being accused of cheating and throwing the games. That's not what's happened, but he can't get anyone to believe him. So he's run off to his grandparents ranch in Montana to figure out what he's going to do after hockey, since it's looking more and more likely that his hockey career is over.

There he's hired Mel to come and teach him all things ranching. He isn't expecting Mel to be a female, but Dan is a pretty easy-going guy...he can live with an attractive woman showing him the ropes.

This is an interesting story just because both the characters are so closed off. Mel's issues are more obvious, but as more and more of the story is revealed it becomes obvious that Dan has just as many mental scars and walls as she does. The difference is that he recognizes that and knows that those walls are going to ruin everything between them. Now he just has to convince Mel of that fact. Both the characters go through a huge personal growth arc. I loved that by the end of the story, Dan was so proactive in that growth. He's so freaking good for Mel. He knows she needs him and is willing to push her to realizing that, too. BUT he refuses to let her run him and his feelings over in her efforts to not be hurt.

I liked the story. The writing is really well done. The story flows and the characters are really well developed. It was super easy to read. The hard part was setting it down to do other things when I needed to. I got swept away with it. The setting was amazing. I loved the surprise of the llama's. I loved the peripheral story of the hockey and Dan's family.

When an opportunity to earn a large sum of money presents itself, Mel is all to eager to take on the job, that is until she meets her new boss. He is a handsome NHL star that is looking to restore life into his families old ranch, but doesn't have the slightest clue where to begin, which is where Mel is suppose to come in... but only after few days together Mel is unsure if she can handle the task. He tests her in ways no one else has and is tempting her to stray from the straight and narrow, which has this tough cowgirl wanting to admit defeat and run...

Dan is nearing the time in his career when NHL players are expected to retire, and he is looking for something to move onto after he's played his final game. His grandfather encourages him to visit the old family ranch and see if it would be something that would fit into his future plans. Dan is a little apprehensive since it is something he knows very little about, but decides to take his grandfather up on his offer and make a visit to the Montana ranch. Once he is there his belief that he is in over his head is reaffirmed, so he sets out to find someone who can help him get the ranch back into working condition, and gets the surprise of his life when "Mel" turns out to be a hardworking cowgirl. There are times when life just suck.s No way around that fact, but the strong accept it, gather their courage and strength and deal… until life doesn’t suck anymore but is actually a joy to live.

That’s pretty much where Dan and Mel are at the beginning of Rebel Cowboy. While Mel might have dreamed of taking on the family ranch one day, it certainly wasn’t under these circumstances with her father paralyzed from a fall and her brother more interested in the bottom of a bottle than the ranch. A ranch that was leaking money like an overfilled sieve. So when the fancy, professional hockey player decided he wanted to play cowboy for awhile and offered the much needed cash Mel desperately wished for to keep her own ranch running – she jumped on the three month consult. Yeah, teach a city boy to ranch in three months – but, hey it was his money and she’d gladly take it.

Dan’s professional hockey career was pretty much done. With the love he had for the game, how could a couple of bad losses turn into the accusations of cheating, like he’d ever throw a game – it simply wasn’t in him. But rumor has destroyed many a career and Dan simply wanted out – maybe for a while, maybe for good. Right now he needed to distract himself with hard, mind-numbing work and his grandparent’s rundown ranch seemed like the perfect fit. Of course, he’d need some instructions but he was a fast learner.

The very last thing he expected “Mel” to look like was this fiery, standoffish, testy beauty in front of him. But if she could teach him the basics on running this ranch, so be it. Seems the cowgirl didn’t like the decision he’d made to turn cowboy – but that was her problem… unless he made it his, too.
