Madonna s 13th studio album Rebel Heart will be released March 10th on Interscope Records. Rebel Heart explores two very distinct sides of my personality, the rebellious renegade side of me and the romantic side of me commented Madonna recently in Billboard. The new album features collaborations with Nicki Minaj, Kanye West, Nas, Chance the Rapper and Mike Tyson and was recorded in NY, LA and London. Producers include Madonna, Diplo, Kanye West, Billboard, Avicii, DJ Dahi and Blood Diamonds, Ryan Tedder, Toby Gad, and Ariel Rechtshald.

Expectations are too high for a number of reasons for REBEL HEART, undoubtedly one of the most anticipated music releases in recent years. So much, indeed, that just 3 months prior to its release, more than 30 of the songs that had been recorded for the album became available in demo versions on the internet. This leak definitely killed a lot of the momentum this album was supposed to have. However, the subsequent official pre-release of 6 tracks received a huge amount of positive feedback. Clearly illustrating her desire to confound and exceed all expectations placed upon her with each new recording, Madonna's lucky 13 (Brits' fall excluded!), is the record that more than any other of hers in the last decade will show to contemporary audiences that there is a reason why this lady has dominated the pop industry for the past 32 years.

The album's generous 19 brand new songs, in total, appear like M's attempt to please everyone, and most of all the fans, to whom REBEL HEART comes as a long-awaited gift (much appreciated, thanks!). Here is a most varied and satisfying record, offering energetic electro-dance cuts, lush ballads, fun singalong ditties ...and the occasional clangers (surely some editing would be beneficial, but hey). If any confirmation were required of M's sustained cultural relevance, it is surely provided by these songs, some of which can contend with her best. Infusing her work with new elements and genres, less concerned than before with drawing younger generations of music, she sounds confident and relaxed. REBEL HEART comes as a bold re-affirmation of M's supremacy in a genre she created and perfected, being her most fascinating and entertaining set of songs since 2005.

Rebel Heart is my favorite Madonna album since "Like A Prayer," and I'd argue it's the best since 1998's "Ray of Light."

"Ghosttown" has the makings of a bona fide hit and when released as a single, it should be recognized as Madonna's best in 10 years. ("Living for Love" is the first single which is also a great anthem for the album).

Other standout songs include "Unapologetic B****," "Devil Pray," "Hold Tight," "Joan of Arc," and my personal favorite, the title track, "Rebel Heart," on which we get a soft and personal look into what the journey of becoming and living as "Madonna the Superstar" has been for her. In a camp with past tracks such as "Promise to Try," "Oh Father," "Mer Girl," "Mother and Father," (and now "Joan of Arc"), it's in the Madonna catalog of songs on which she sings about herself in a way that feels truly introspective (unlike a theoretically personally-themed song like "Keep It Together"). The song, "Rebel Heart," is a unique contribution by Madonna in that it feels intensely personal yet overwhelmingly positive and celebratory in tone, rather than mournful or searching.

Critics have focused heavily on the producers that Madonna employed for this album and they deserve to share in the credit, however it's troubling to think that they would be given all of it. We don't as regularly hear the name "Pat Leonard" in connection with "Like A Prayer" and make no mistake, this is still a Madonna album: dancey, tongue-in-cheek, thematic, provocative, and fun.

First off, I really like the music. This review is not about the music, but the quality of the Vinyl itself.

Well I read the reviews of others in regards to how bad the vinyl sounds, and decided that it couldn't be that bad. Maybe their carts are not set up properly. Tracking is off etc etc. It really is bad. So much so that I wish I could send it back. The problem is I had already downloaded the free mp3 version of the album and if I sent this back I would still have to pay for the digital copy.

This is one of them instances where the mp3 digital copy sounds much better than the vinyl. I just don't understand that Madonna (The Perfectionist) could of possibly not heard the album after it was pressed and gave it the thumbs up. There is so much noise on this album. There really isn't a "silent" moment on this record. There are so many songs that really deserve better engineering from a Vinyl standpoint.

Do yourself a favor and just buy the CD. Do not take the chance that I did and buy this album hoping other reviewers were wrong.

Whether you love or hate Madonna, she is an iconic force that simply cannot be ignored. Her constant self-reinvention has helped her remain relevant for longer than most wanna-be pop chanteuses have even been alive. If her newly released 13th studio album Rebel Heart is any indication, she will also be sticking around long after most of them are gone.

Madonna recently commented in Billboard that the album “explores two very distinct sides of my personality, the rebellious renegade side of me and the romantic side of me.” This makes perfect sense as you listen to the tracks, which spin in polar opposite directions, from the wistful longing of “Ghosttown” to bold braggadocio of “Unapologetic Bitch”.

What sets this album apart from some of her recent work is her willingness to dig deeper into her psyche and share what she finds there. The album’s title song harkens back to the days of “Papa Don’t Preach”- not musically, but topically. It’s fascinating to realize that after all these years and insane amounts of success, the pain inflicted by her father still haunts her. I suppose no amount of fame or money can heal certain wounds. And who can’t relate to that? The older you get, the more time feels like a circle, with the same voices rising up from the past again and again, the same moments branded on your soul, infinitely replayed.

Similarly, “Joan of Arc” delves into the pitfalls and complexities of fame itself. I know, I know, having power and money is harrrrd, cry me a river. And yet she never slides into the quicksand of self-pity here. She manages to remind us of her core humanity, that underneath the glitz she is just one small human in this vast and often cruel world.

Lest you think Madonna has gone soft, don’t panic.
