Yet despite Jason’s new planetary universe’s rules and regulations, human nature still prevails, which we, too, discover as we travel along with him and find out that ambition, heists, extortion, sexual desire, buddy bantering, and duplicity are alive and well.
Science fiction enthusiasts will love this book; it reads like the best of that genre. And although his many descriptions are detailed and eloquent, they manage to keep the reader on the edge of his/her seat. But what particularly appealed to me was the evolving relationship between Jason and “his Sofia,” which was funny, touching, and morally insightful. Highly recommended!
I was advised to be Google ready, but thought I'm a wordsmith and can use my Thesaurus if necessary. Well, it's not just words, RL includes space terminology and acronyms that will have you searching meanings - without interrupting the story, just because you want to know every detail.
Vivid imagery made me feel I was along on this ride with an awareness of many things Jason and Sofia experienced. As they flew past what was once the Gulf of Mexico, my heart sank, but the time frame is thousands of years from now, when most Earthlings are extinct. Survivors live in levels and must attain credits to move upward in the chain of power, as well as receive enhanced DNA with each level. If only body healing wasn't so far in our future. Succinctly written yet full of action and unusual situations, as well as philosophical undertones, I was drawn to this story and now await part 2. Thus far the best Sci-Fi I've read this year!
The story of a man's love of his synthetic ship controller was well told by the author.
This is novelette and as such a quick and satisfying read. I felt there was much more that could be explored about the dystopian Earth and the characters we met in this story, but because of the length of the book, this opportunity was lost. I would have preferred a much more expansive story, but unfortunately that does seem the trend these days - catering to the short attention span.
Still, it was a really good read and one I would recommend to fans of dystopian fiction.
The story follows Jason, a captain exploring what was once the planet Earth, but now looks and feels like nothing we know. The erotic encounters he has are mostly in Virtual Reality, yet they feel no less real for that. They’re definitely spot on and the author has a very clear writing style, which gets the images and the plotline across clearly and concisely. I found myself immersed in the story from pretty much the first page, eager to find out what happens next.
In short, I enjoyed this short book from start to finish. I read it practically in one sitting, and was left wanting more. I hope book 2 comes out soon! If you’re looking for a hot sci-fi story then look no further than this one!
