By Philip L. Edwards on May 19, 2009
Format: Paperback
I remember, from my gradeschool days, orange covered biographies. Mostly 200 or so pages in length. I must have read biographies from George Washington to George Washington Carver. I loved them all, and developed, not only a love for reading, but also a love of history.

Nancy Gentry has captured that wonderful feeling of being educated and entertained in the same moment in time. Her ability to tell a story that reads seamlessly, is a gift. It's amazing that the story Rebel in Petticoats can intrigue one into wanting to read on and read quickly, and at the same time educate on the day to day realities, and hardships, that the Civil War brought upon so many people, for so (too) long.

Having been brought up in the "North"...Ft Wayne, Indiana and Chicago, Illinois, my perspective on the Civil War was a bit biased and naive. Rebel in Petticoats has peaked my interest to learn more as to the exact nature of the Civil War...from both sides...both sides "winners" and both sides "losers".

My only criticism of Rebel in Petticoats is that it was not longer...although, in retrospect, when Nancy Gentry is trying to capture the imagination and hold the attention of today's generation of "Orange Cover Biographies" her mission was accomplished.

My "Blue Northern" hat is off to her as I now look for a "grey" version to put next to it.

This book is about a young girl coming of age during the War Between The States. It covers the breadth of the War as the Franklin family suffers the losses and joys that people experienced during that difficult time. It has a wholesome aspect to it that I enjoyed. I was a little disappointed that during the climax towards the end, the young girl faints. However, that was typical of the era, so I am willing to overlook it for now. I really enjoyed how this book was very much written from the perspective of the family life during that era and I enjoyed how it does an excellent job of explaining some of the history of the time period. At times, it felt like the pace was a slow one. But, I nonetheless, enjoyed the read very much so.

A Kid's Review on February 1, 2009
Format: Paperback
I am in fourth grade and chose this book because I am interested in history. This book tells the story of a little girl during the Civil War whose brother and father go off to fight. It describes her life back at home with her mother. If you love Little House books you will love this book just as much! I couldn't put it down....I had to beg my mom to stay up late so I could read it.
