I had a similar reaction when I first read CJ Cherryh. A complex society dissimilar to ours with a struggling heroine and seemingly insurmountable challengens pulled me in quickly. I raced through both available books and am waiting for the next title. I sincerely hope she writes quickly as well as entertainingly.

The construct of the government and society in Kopievsky's future Earth reminds me a little of "Brave New World", but the characters are more fully developed and believable. I was drawn into their world and want to know how the story concludes! I very seldom continue to buy sequels of a story I've begun, but this one I think I will.

Sci-fi that makes you think

Rebellion is another thought-provoking entry in Kopievsky’s excellent Divided Elements series. The story takes place in Otpur, a dystopian Paris where people’s roles and even behaviors are determined by their element: Fire, Earth, Air, or Water. Many chafe against this hierarchy, however, and an uprising is brewing. Anaiya, the protagonist from the first book, is reviled by both sides in the conflict. But she’s also the only one who can discover the truth behind Otpur’s divisions—why they were created, and by whom.

I found Rebellion slow at times, but the writing is beautiful and the action pulses when it appears. Definitely worth a read.

Great book if you're into science fiction

I was offered an advanced reader copy of this novel to review for Netgalley. As I did not read the first book in this series, I was very confused. It took me awhile to catch up and figure out the backstory. Once I did put the history of the first book in order, it started to pick up for me. The beginning is very slow in the aspect that there is a lot of backstory and reiteration of what I assume occurs in the first novel. It ended being a huge twist and action packed. It sparked my interest at the end. It does have another book that follows, but I don't think I will be reading. My go to genre is not science fiction, and while I ended up enjoying this book in the end, it's just not for me.

Kopievsky's command of language dazzled me. Her beautiful, thought-provoking prose paired with intense action scenes will grip you from the start and refuse to let go. I'm eagerly awaiting book three.
