As in other books by Murray, there is a pressure steadily being exerted which ratchets up the tension in the reader. The writing is so smooth going from location to location it feels as if the words are effortless from the writer. This is not, in fact, the truth at all. It takes skill, awareness, and downright hard work to craft a story like this. It doesn't take very much time at all to know the people in this tale, nor to "see" the school, the homes of the four teens, the campground, or the hot springs. The descriptions are wound around the actions of the teens and almost seep into the readers' consciousness. The dialogue, too, is natural; well, mostly, as there is a lack of swearing. (Which, as an adult, I appreciate.). This book, as with all his books, is suitable for young teens through the adult ages. There are unanswered questions and a cliffhanger at the end, but the reader is told at the beginning of the book that it is the introductory book for a series, so readers shouldn't be surprised at this type of ending. This book draws the reader in, investing the reader with curiosity, a feeling of going along on an ever building ride; when the page turns and the realization that the story is over for now, the reader is left with a feeling of surprise and disappointment. That is exactly what Dean Murray told the reader! Now, that reaction evoked from the reader, is proof he has done his job well. He does it every time he writes a series! For that, and the other reasons listed above, is what makes him an excellent writer. I totally recommend this book to any young person and upwards in age. The story rocks, it's clean, and the writing is wonderful! Go, treat yourself!
We have Selene facing bullies and other hard times by quietly accepting life as it is. She is human and feels anger; however, she simply doesn't act on her negative feelings. The she meets Jace and his sister Kat - and things aren't as they seem! I can't really explain this as it's part of the magic in the story, and I don't want to ruin it for you! While Kat and Jace seem to know more about Selene than she seems to know herself, we are introduced to a world of Immortals and magic that takes some of what we've heard about and creates something new.
I enjoyed Dean Murray's style in revealing the characters, their histories, and the foundation for... the rest of the story! We are given characters who have very human feelings... and we have life in a town where people worry about offending the powers that be. At the same time, we are indeed thrilled when karma does play fair finally! (True love will find you in the next life...) :)
The realism within the fantasy was a great mix! The realism has us identify with Selene, her father, Ari, and Sandra. The fantasy portion has you being swept away with a fairy trying to help... and... the cliffhanger has me dying to jump into the next book in the series!!
While I've read some fantasy, I must admit I enjoy writing as this and where the characters need to strive and work toward their goals. Also, the romance part was more gradual than in some stories, which I find refreshing as well! I strongly recommend this book if you like a different story with heart!
I was selected to prelaunch read in exchange for an honest review. I do not normally read Paranormal Sci-Fi books. However, I made an exception when I started the Reflections Series with Broken, to be honest, because it was free. I now love Dean Murray's books and cannot wait till the next one comes out, literally.
With "Reborn", I was engaged completely from the beginning and could not put the book down! I stayed up really late reading it one night, just to try to find a good place to put it down. There wasn’t one. The characters are so real and vivid to me that I feel like I know them! I cannot wait for the next book to see what happens next. Thank You Dean Murray for sharing your gift with us!
