I’m always a little hesitant when I read something that switches POV across the chapters, especially when there are FIVE points of view going on. However, one thing that D. Fischer does really well is keep her characters sounding different. Even in the narration, it’s easy to tell which character I’m following. One of my favorite things about this book is that each separate storyline, each individual character, eventually crosses over in some way. Somehow, they are all connected. It was fun to see how all of it worked out, and I’m incredibly excited for the rest of the series!
The story is unpredictable. The characters are vivid and colorful, along with sweet, unaware and narcissistic. The author shows a side to the gods of the realms that makes my stomach dance and turn. It broke my heart and started it up again. It dashed my hopes and gave me kept me wishing and full of expectation.
There was so much more than I expected in this novel. There was no place for the story to become stagnate or still. The characters had their separate stories along with crossing over each other's. And the cliffhanger only left me wanting the rest. I cannot wait for the next book.
In this story, we follow five different people, though it's not hard to keep track and the switch is always flawless and easy to follow. Two of these people, we actually met in the author's previous series, though you don't have to read it to understand what's going on. It was just nice to see them again :)
A deal gone wrong sparks a shift in the realms. Everyone can feel it, but no one knows how or why it is happening. Five separate entities. Five separate lives. All linked together by the bonds of fate.
In this story we find out more about Kat, the snarky witch without a coven. We find out what happens to Dyson after his death. And we are also introduced to three others that you can't help but become attached to. One thing you will learn about this author is to never get attached. That's all I'm saying.
This book had me on the edge of my seat from page one. The way everything is so interconnected and how it all ties in together? That just goes to show how amazing the author's brain is. It shows how much thought and time (and probably sweat, tears, and swear words) she puts into telling these amazing tales! You get dragged in, hooked, until you feel like you are actually there. As if you are actually living it! And the end of the book? Talk about an emotional punch to the face!
Definitely 5 out of 5 stars, though I'd give so many more if I could! <3
This is pretty much how I was after the first few chapters of this book.
While this book manages to finish strong (somewhat, relatively speaking, to maybe a mouse?), the beginning chapters are disjointed and confusing. While I typically appreciate the style of jumping around between the points of view of different characters, the storyline of each one is so VASTLY different that I found myself actually wondering who these people are!!
Ultimately there IS a connection between all these characters that we are introduced to and expected to get invested in, but it takes a LONG time to figure out that they are even remotely connected!!
Okay, that being said, this IS a good story, with vampires, witches, fairies and angels, and of course unsuspecting humans. By the end of the book I was more or less invested in at least 3 of the characters. A couple I'm still trying to figure them out, because by the time the book came back to them I had forgotten their entire story arc.
While I won't say I am panting breathlessly waiting for Book 2, I do think the book did a good job of leaving you hanging sufficiently enough that you MIGHT want to get the second book. That being said, you might want to reread the first book again just so you can keep track of who everyone is!!!
I gave 2.5 stars because I do think there is a story here.
