From a Christian mother of two, without any experience of this, but with insistent request to God for showing the way of how to help, and eventually finding God’s way as she goes into “the waters” of practical engagement of faith, started what no other charity had done before, a humanitarian clothes appeal and expedition to one of the most dangerous places on earth at the time.
This outreach grew exponentially nationwide in the space of about a year thanks to the generous response of many churches and volunteers. The work then diversified to medical aid and equipments including ambulances, then the building of field hospitals in the middle of war zones! Thanks to her relationship with Dr A, a Christian doctor and surgeon of great knowledge and ability prepared to sacrifice himself for the sake of his people, Samara gets to visit many areas in Syria, including those area just liberated from the Jihadist grip.
Not deterred by the dangerous and complex situation, unhelped by the fact that she is British, she brings comfort to many victims of ideological and religious cruelties in Syria, trapped as human shields.
So not only a story of deep compassion but a non-judgemental insight into why this monstrous war went on for so long.
An eye opener giving a different perspective from the one-sided BBC reports and comments we have been used to. Especially, her chapter called “Love the Jihadist” demonstrates lucidity (not missing the fact of the inhumane nature of the indoctrinated Jihadist) and is not a call for naïvity or of simply an exciting adventure.
Samara’s Christian understanding is that through “undeserved love can the wound of humanity be healed.” And it is precisely what she is doing actively by the faith in her Lord Jesus Christ who have answered many crucial life or death situations prayers through specific portions of the Bible.
What next?
In this book, Samara shows how Dr A and herself are both driven for the building of Grace hospital, a state of the art hospital in Syria, in which she is involved in every aspect including the designing stage.

In 2014 God called Samara Levy three times over 8 months to "start collecting" aid to send to Syria. Samara was a stay at home mum with two young boys with no experience whatsoever. It started with a vision to fill one lorry of aid, but four years later she has just loaded her 101st container, has sent 11 ambulances to Syria, set up a charity and distributed aid to more than 350,000 people in the Middle East.
Since starting this work, Samara has visited Syria many times, one of the most dangerous war zones of our generation, which has the highest number of kidnappings and killings of humanitarian workers in the world and in 2016, 2/3rds of the world's attacks on healthcare took place in Syria.
Rebuilding the Ruins tells the story not only of how this work developed from nothing, but also of Samara's own internal journey: what she has learnt about stepping out in faith and listening to God, and of how he uses the ordinary to achieve the extraordinary.
Part testimony and part sharing, this book will inspire all who see the daily headlines about the situation in Syria and wonder what possible difference they can make. It is a story of hope, and of how in our weakness and inability God does the miraculous with whatever we can offer.

DoreenReviewed in the United Kingdom on August 24, 20195.0 out of 5 stars What God can do with a submitted life!!
This is a beautifully and sensitively written book about Samara's faith-filled and love-inspired journey to serve God by serving the people of Syria. I have seldom read a personal story that is so honest, so challenging and yet so self-effacing. Samara writes with such warmth, humiity and devotion to both Jesus and the people of Syria. It is so well written that it is hard to put down. It contains harrowing details of life in Syria but at the same time conveys hope, joy love and compassion throughout. But be prepared to be seriously challenged in the last chapter.
Amazon CustomerReviewed in the United Kingdom on November 24, 20195.0 out of 5 stars Gripping with interest
This book is so worth a read. A wonderful story of a young Mum who did wonderful things, she never dreamt of doing, because she listened to God. She did what he told her to do, and he gave her the ability to carry it out.
So interesting, and a true story.
EstherReviewed in the United Kingdom on August 9, 20195.0 out of 5 stars A great book about how to live out our faith
Samara wrote eloquently and movingly about the suffering of Syrian people and how her faith in God has led her to help these people, first by sending clothes to now preparing to build a hospital. This book has touched me in many ways but most importantly it has taught me about faith. In Samara's words faith is 'we pick up our foot to take a step, seeing nothing in front of us and no place to stand, we should trust that by the time we put our foot back down, there will be something firm underneath it to stand on'. This is a must read for any Christian who needed the encouragement to step out in faith.
alicephoebeReviewed in the United Kingdom on August 10, 20194.0 out of 5 stars Challenging and thought provoking. Not an escapist read!
It is always difficult to write an account of events when identities have to be protected and not all information can be given in detail. I personally would have liked to have known more about the development of the physical aid distribution in the early days of this Appeal, and for that reason only have given 4 stars not 5.perhaps that is a bit unfair as I quite understand the need to protect groups and individuals. Holder and Stoughton are a reputable and well established publishing company and having engaged in depth with Samara have made this book available to us. It is not a handbook in how to do theology nor how to distribute aid, I raised my eyebrows a few times, but God is bigger than all that and it is a record of what can be done when love is allowed to have sway. It is a fact that many many vulnerable people have been helped and loved, and along the way employment has been given to a quite a few. People are alive today who would not be if it were not for this work. Obviously it is small compared to the need, but it is not small compared to those who are helped. It is challenging and thought provoking. Samara could have chosen a quiet and comfortable life. Instead she has chosen the path of serving God and others.
