Review

Rebuilding Books: "For relationships, divorce, and beyond" -- books in this series are for those building relationships, going through divorce, or rebuilding their lives after divorce. Inspired by the work of renowned divorce therapist, Dr. Bruce Fisher, the Rebuilding Books offer expert information and practical self-help procedures for adults and children. These straightforward, life-affirming resources can improve relationships and help make the divorce process easier, healthier, and less painful, leading to more-fulfilled lives and stronger "second-time" relationships. --Publisher's Note

About the Author

Bruce Fisher, EdD (1931-1998), developed the "rebuilding" model of divorce recovery nearly 35 years ago. Founder and director of the Family Relations Learning Center (Boulder, Colorado), he personally trained thousands of individuals and therapists in this approach, enriching the lives of hundreds of thousands worldwide. He was a highly popular divorce therapist, author, and teacher, and a Clinical Member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy. His “Fisher Divorce Adjustment Scale” is an internationally recognized measure of adjustment to the ending of a love relationship.

Bruce grew up on a family farm in Iowa, was the first in his family to earn a college degree, and went on to a doctorate from the University of Northern Colorado in human development. His dissertation research focused on the development of the Fisher Divorce Adjustment Scale.

Bruce's widow, Nina Hart, is co-author with Bruce of the popular relationships book, Loving Choices. Nina continues the teaching, training, consulting, and therapy work she and Bruce did together for more than fifteen years.

Format: Paperback
In December of 1999, I was planning my wedding. In February 2000, my then-fiance broke our engagement (and went on to marry someone else). I was quite devastated by the breakup and went through many levels of anguish. There were also lots of things for me to work on -- like, what I might have done to contribute to the breakup. Fisher's "Rebuilding" theory was extremely useful. Fisher uses the principle of building blocks to help work through each issue, or "stumbling block." One example that stuck with me was the "stumbling block" of "I didn't do enough, or didn't try hard enough." The "rebuilding" block was "I did the best I could" While this may seem simplistic, the "rebuilding blocks" served as excellent reminders of the good things in life. If you have suffered a relationship loss, please check out this book. You will find many useful ideas, and will assuredly feel better as a result.

This book is an absolute must for anyone going through a relationship breakup. The book sets out all the different phases of breakup grief and gives you some logic and hope in a crazy, painful time.

I first discovered this book in 1999 and have recommended it to everyone whom has been in the same situation since.

This book helped me a couple of times when I was going thru a breakup that I thought I couldn't live with. It helped me know and understand what and why I was going thru these emotions and how long it takes to heal enough to actually grow and mature thru this experience.

This is a great book for anyone going through turmoil as your life turns upside down. Initially I just bought the book which is very helpful and then I discovered this workbook. The two of them work great together. Very helpful.

Although this workbook is meant to go along with the "Rebuilding" workshop, it can still be used without the workshop, in conjunction with the "Rebuilding" book. It has some additional information to think about and exercises to do as you are healing from the loss of your relationship.

Am a therapist. Found book once at discount used store. Found many pages trauma patients could relate to, especially those needing to 'feel' to 'understand their need to reattach to feelings' and those feeling abandoned or alone. Purchased book to go with the workbook. Many truths.

It is a excellent book. I facilitated classes using this book in the 80's. I also did training in Boulder.CO with Bruce Fisher himself.. I got this book to pass on to a young lady who just got divorced and has 4 children. The building blocks have not changed. Still very important.

Both the book and the workbook have been helpful in my therapy practice with processing feelings, loss, and grief. Helps enable a person to determine why their moods shift and how to get past it. Highly recommended for mental health professionals. Many helpful homework resources.
