In December 2014, the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence (SSCI) released a 500+ page executive summary of a 6,000 page study of the CIA's detention and interrogation of al Qa'ida terrorists. In early 2015 publishers released the study in book form and called it the report on torture. Rebuttal presents the rest of the story. In addition to reprinting the official responses from the SSCI minority and CIA, this publication also includes eight essays from senior former CIA officials who all are deeply knowledgeable about the program -and yet none of whom were interviewed by the SSCI staff during the more than four years the report was in preparation. These authors of the eight essays are George Tenet, Porter Goss, Gen. Michael V. Hayden, USAF (Ret.), John McLaughlin, Michael Morell, J. Philip Mudd, John Rizzo, and Jose A. Rodriguez, Jr.

About the Author

George J. Tenet was the second-longest-serving Director of Central Intelligence in U.S. history, leading the CIA and Intelligence Community from 1997 to 2004. He was Deputy Director of Central Intelligence from 1995 to 1997 and prior to that Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Intelligence Programs at the National Security Council and Staff Director of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. He is the author of the number-one New York Times bestseller At the Center of the Storm. Porter J. Goss was a Member of Congress from 1989 until 2004, at which time he became the Director of Central Intelligence. He served as a member of the CIA's clandestine service from 1962 to 1972. Mike Hayden is a retired Air Force general and former Director of the Central Intelligence Agency and the National Security Agency. He is currently a principal at the Chertoff Group and a Distinguished Visiting Professor at George Mason University. He is the author of the upcoming Playing to the Edge: American Intelligence in the Age of Terror, a memoir of his time on the national intelligence scene. John McLaughlin capped a thirty-two-year career at CIA by serving as its Deputy Director from 2000 to 2004 and as Acting Director in the latter part of 2004. During his career he worked on nearly every part of the world, briefed four American Presidents, and frequently represented the Intelligence Community on diplomatic delegations abroad. He teaches at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies, publishes frequent assessments of foreign affairs, and is Chairman of the CIA Officers Memorial Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting the families of CIA officers who die in the line of duty.

Essential read for any citizen that believes in our Constitution, Form of Government, & the necessity for unconventional programs necessary to protect our country.

The Feinstein Report was produced by one of the most flawed processes one can imagine. Can you imagine a Congressional oversight investigation that doesn't interview those involved? I can't - yet we are supposed to take Feinstein's report as credible.

The essays are a superb takedown featuring the flaws in the Feinstein report. Furthermore, when Feinstein's report is contradicted by the memoirs of President Bush regarding whether he was briefed on these procedures, one has to give the arguments in the essays in this book - as well as the CIA response and the views of the minority members of the Senate Intelligence Committee - serious consideration.

The Naval Institute Press has done the American public a service by publishing this book, and allowing the essay authors a chance to tell their side of the story - a side that Dianne Feinstein did NOT want to hear.

Interesting enough, although I'm not sure how accurate it is. Senator Feinstein (well, her staff, more likely) has produced a lengthy, point-by-point rebuttal of this work, well worth a read regardless of your particular view. [...]
If someone can counter Feinstein's arguments, maybe I'll be convinced. Other than this book, the main dissents are the CIA's June 2013 response and the Senate committee's minority report. For the bet-argued opposing viewpoint, I would probably recommend the minority report. But, in all, the attacks on the SSCI study have come off as rather weak to me.
