However, this is NOT an appropriate seat for any child below the age of 5-6 regardless of their weight. Children that are less than 5-6 can be seriously injured if riding in any kind of booster seat. They need to be in a five point harness still. Their skeletons are too fragile for a the "three point harness" of an adult seatbelt- a five point harness spreads crash forces over a larger, stronger portions of the body (shoulders, hips, crotch- where there are strong bones) and an adult seatbelt, even when the child is in a booster, crosses their abdomen too much instead of their hips. If you were to get into a crash, many of their internal organs in their abdomen could be lacerated (cut into internally) and they could bleed to death inside in a matter of minutes.
I really hope you will consider keeping your young children, who I am sure you adore and love very much, in a five point harness. There are many on the market that have higher weight limits these days... Britax Frontier, Diono Radian, Graco MyRide, Graco Size4Me, Britax Marathon, Evenflo Maestro just to name a few.
For reference-we also own a Recaro ProBooster, which is a larger seat and is a little more "posh," if you will. The ProBooster is nice, and the kids like it (it stays in my husband's car, with our 3rd Vivo), but when it came time for my 6 year old to pick a booster, between the Vivo and the ProBooster, having spent time in both because we already had them for our 7 year old, he chose the Vivo.
Recaro is a great brand. The 5-point harness seats we had before the kids grew into the boosters were Britax, and we find the quality in workmanship similar. We are expecting our third child in November, and he will ride in a Recaro seat, too.
You won't regret your purchase!
I believe in keeping children harnessed as long as possible, so I don't even begin to use booster seats until children are at least six years old. Therefore, each child who has ridden in a booster in my car has been a minimum of 40 pounds and a minimum of six years old.
The Recaro Vivo booster is rated for use from 30 pounds, but I've never used it for a child that lightweight. My comments about belt fit, therefore, do not address the fit of the belt for little kids (30-40 pounds or under age six).
The Vivo has red shoulder belt guides in the headrest and cut-outs in the base for the lap belt. Both guides work extremely well. The shoulder belt guides are open enough to allow the shoulder belt to slide easily, which is very important so extra slack isn't introduced should the child lean forward. The lap belt guides are nice and low, which appropriately fits the lap belt agains the child's hips/upper thighs. Again, this is important so there is reduced risk of abdominal damage in an accident.
~~EASE OF USE~~
Because the Vivo is simply a booster, and doesn't even LATCH in, it simply just sits on the vehicle seat. Therefore, "installation" is quite easy.
The Vivo's headrest is VERY easy to adjust by squeezing a "handle" on the back of the headrest. It smoothly moves up and down, making it easy to adjust to the child's height.Read more ›
