The device is extremely lightweight and while it has some rubber feet on the bottom, it can still move around with ease, especially with simply moving the cable.

I took the device apart almost immediately to check out the internals (2 screws visible under the adjustable foot, two screws concealed under the long rubber foot at the bottom), and there's a very basic circuit card inside, probably 20% of the overall footprint of the device (the device is sized to hold a smart card, so it doesn't have much room to be made smaller).

The device basically has 8 pins and a "contact switch" that detects when a card is inserted. When the card is inserted, it depresses the contact switch, wakes the device, and windows will attempt to install the smartcard (if a proper one is inserted).

It will attempt to read credit card style chip cards, but doesn't seem to read them properly (apparently it's a different protocol). It did recognize my TWIC card properly as a SmartCard identification card (found under "SmartCards" in Windows Device Manager), but I haven't yet found any open source software to mess around with to read any data from the card.

I docked this a star because this reader comes with absolutely no documentation. The description on amazon seems to have some clues, but other than that, it's assumed you use it plug and play.

If you are simply trying to buy this (or many) as part of a larger CAC/smartcard technology rollout within your organization, this would probably work (although again, it feels quite cheap). If you work for the DoD and want/need access using your 2FA credentials with your CAC card, and for whatever reason you have to buy the device yourself, this would probably work.

But overall, I see no real reason for any civilian not interested in tinkering to buy this.

I've recently transitioned into a new role where I'm working from home more than in the field. Because of this I've adopted a new setup at home where I'm plugging my laptop into a dock and using external monitors for my day-to-day. Unfortunately, that makes using my PKI card a little more work to do as I have to remove it when it's not in use, but use it on a somewhat regular basis. With my laptop sitting where it is, putting the card in and taking it out has problematic.

When I saw this USB PKI reader I thought why not. Worst thing that could happen is it not work. It's been in place for about a month now and I can't for the life of me figure out how I used the PKI card before... This has made my day-to-day so much easier. It's very light weight, it works out of the box, and it does exactly what I needed.

Pros:
- Driverless install on my Windows 10 laptop
- Small/compact so it's not taking up much space.
- Decent length cable (I didn't measure it before installing it on my desk (running cable, etc.) so I can't get the exact length)

Cons:
- I should have gotten this much sooner than I did. It's a great addition and saves me a lot of time.

This a very simple plug and play device!
It came up instantly on my Win10 device.

I opened it up just for fun (see photo).
Very clean and simple design.

Works fine with CAC card, which is what I wanted it for.

It does respond to other cards, and lights up, and mounts in Win 10 when they are inserted.
Haven't found software that enables me to use it with other cards.

I really like this reader!
I'm hoping to use it for more than just CAC eventually.
