Reolink Argus 2 – better than the Blink XT
5 out of 5 stars
Reolink Argus 2 – better than the Blink XT
**UPDATE AS PROMISED** - 2.5 months later with limited alarms (0 to few a day) the battery percent goes down about 30 percent a month. As i am approaching the end of the third month i will be at 10 percent remaining. For heavier use, i would say 2 months battery life and light use (light in a backyard where mine is and its winter) 3 months.Reolink Argus 2 – better than the Blink XTIf this camera had free cloud storage and long lasting batteries like the Blink XT it would easily be the best and it still is due to some cool features but it is not by a lot.I will be reviewing the Reolink Argus 2 and then comparing it to the Blink XT (another battery operated camera that is owned by Amazon and if you spend more than 5 minutes of researching battery operated cameras you will see it so hopefully this will be helpful lol). Also, I bought the Ring Spotlight battery camera as well and will update this review once I compare that one for all you researchers.I got this for 20 bucks off the 130 price on Amazon, it was a lightning deal. There is no number to call this company you have to email them but so far the pros outweigh the cons.Pros:- Instant notifications. This is huge for me. For the BXT there nothing in the instructions that I saw says this and I read it from other reviewers but it only notifies you AFTER its done recording. The lowest time to record I believe is 8 seconds so that means you won’t get alerted for 1-2 seconds after that for your phone to actually receive so like 10 seconds compares to Reolink’s 1-2 seconds without the delay.- Much better at night, the Reolink has more Infrared lights and has this starlight future which makes the picture more clear in color at night and black/white feature- It does have a siren or pre-recorded alarm. Other reviewers/questions said you cannot manually trigger the siren and that its motion activated. This is one of the reasons why I bought the Ring as well because I want to trigger an alarm if needed not have it motion activated for obvious reasons like a mailman coming to the door. You can shut this feature off if you want. However, you can set a pre-recorded alarm and only have it at night like “go away, I am watching you, leave right now” something like that or you can trigger the siren which is like 2-3 seconds and not very loud but in the middle of the night with not much noise it would hopefully spook a bad person away.- It does have 2-way audio. This is mostly going to be used if you use it at your front door as “doorbell camera” I have the Nest doorbell (bought it over the Ring doorbell in case you are interested in one of those as well) For example, if you are at the grocery store or work and the delivery person is your door you can tell the person to leave it. Honestly, I don’t even use this feature because I don’t want to spook the person on the other end but its cool to have it and if you have kids im sure they would enjoy using this feature. I use it to spook my mother in law and sister in law when they come over!!- Does come with an outdoor “skin” whereas the BXT does not. As I am typing this it sounds like I am just hating on the Blink XT which is kind of true but I am trying to educate as many reviewing “friends” as I can. It has rained like 7 straight days here in New Hampshire and the camera on the BXT keeps getting fogged up/rain droplets on it and the Argus 2 has this protective lip on top of it with the case you can put on it that would solve that problem.- It does have local storage that I briefly mentioned earlier. Some people are paranoid with their videos going to their cloud. Mine is just of the back door of my house so I don’t care but your storage has to go to a memory card or you can pay for the cloud feature. It was free in beta stage up until very recently.Cons/Comparison to Blink XT- Not long lasting batteries (Reolink and Ring both last 1-2 months compared to Blink’s 1-2 years)- In the future you have to pay for cloud storage it used to be free- Slow to open notifications especially not on WIFI- You have to look at live view before seeing the recorded clip meaning when you open the app after a motion alert you then have to click the playback button there should be a setting of which one you want.- The company is in China. When I had questions about the BXT or Ring I called them. I have seen other reviewers who are emailing the company it days and sometimes weeks since China is many hours ahead of us. I called Ring last Saturday night at like 10pm (was bored and yes researching, a favorite hobby of mine and I got a hold of nice girl…you can’t do that if you have a question with Reolink so let’s hope I don’t have any issues!Update:*** I am going to be returning the BXT for the Reolink Argus 2 and am waiting for the Ring Spotlight battery cam but that is $200 (I called Ring and got 5% off – ALWAYS CALL PLACES TO GET COUPON CODES) so I got it for $190. The BXT and Argus 2 was 130 but got both for 110 and the Ring you have to pay $3 dollars a month of $30 dollars for the year to record with the Ring. Not sure if it’s worth it yet though!I am going to attach two similar pictures to show the differences in quality at night. The one without the time stamp at the top is the BXT.I also attached a picture showing myself on the BXT to show you that due to low quality at night (which is when I want to rely on a camera the most, most likely) you can’t make out the features in my face.*** If you found this review helpful, please click helpful so I am encouraged to keep writing updates and the other battery operated cameras I am testing : )- One final note if you are considering an indoor camera and you don’t care if its wired the Nest cam is awesome and records 24/7 non-stop so you won’t miss anything whereas most cameras including all the others I have talked about only record in motion clips.!!!!!!!Thanks for reading this all!!!!!!!

The Argus 2 has turned out to be a great little security camera for my needs. Battery power lets it be easily placed just about anywhere. The battery is removable, so it would be convenient to keep an extra charged up, ready to replace without incurring camera downtime. Although, I'm running my outdoor camera with a solar panel, and that has kept the camera going for over a year without issue. The picture is clear, even at night. Integration with, and access from, the Reolink camera app has been quick. This is a wi-fi camera, so no extra Z-wave or Zigbee hub is needed.

For security, the app requires login at each access. However, it can accept the iPhone's fingerprint recognition, so quick and easy.

My one reservation is the outdoor mount. Indoors, as long as the camera can be set or hung vertically, the magnetic ball mount is great. However, the outdoor mount, meant to support just about any mounting position and camera angle, is plastic, and feels incredibly flimsy. In fairness, I've been using it for over a year in true 4-season weather, and it hasn't failed. But its build quality just seems far below that of the camera. It's designed to be repeatable, in that the mount snaps off the base, and an index is intended to let it snap back in to the same position. But I find it impossible to maintain the camera's position on the mount. Things come loose. If the camera does have to be manipulated for cleaning or other reasons, I have to reposition it using the phone app to confirm the desired view.

It would also be nice if Reolink would work with Wink and SmartThings to get their devices to be explicitly recognized by the hubs, although neither hub seems to be enjoying much development effort at the moment.

Another note is that to integrate it with other home automation systems like Alexa, using motion sensing to turn on lights, for example, it may have to be explicitly made available in the Reolink app. On my iPhone, this is accomplished by opening the app and, on the initial screen, choosing the "Cloud" option near the top. I never noticed that option, even though it's right there, and I'd seen it hundreds of times. Anyway, selecting it presents two others, "Cloud Storage" and "Smart Home." In the latter, just select the camera's icon and press "enable." If an icon is not visible for your camera, the firmware probably needs to be updated, and that may require contacting customer support. But not to worry, Reolink's support has been outstanding. I worked through email, primarily with Fiona. She understood what was needed, communicated effectively and frequently, made things happen on her end, and followed up well. Everything she promised was delivered. Thanks also to Crystal for her assistance. When so many customer support experiences go badly, or not at all, it's especially refreshing to be able to report a delightful one.

Definitely recommended.

This is my first camera purchase. After reading reviews and hearing the need for a strong wifi signal I moved my router from bedroom to den which is where the backdoor/deck is located that I wanted to mount the camera and monitor. After moving the router I checked my cell phone from the back deck and was now getting full bars where I was only getting 2 before from my wifi. My back door is the most likely point of unauthorized entry because it is secluded.
I ordered the Reolink Argus 2 and mini SD card for storage. I opted to leave off the solar charger for now. This unit got comparable reviews to the Arlo and Nest at a better price. They also allowed me to purchase just one camera at a time where some of the others require a 2 pack or more. I don't anticipate needing more than one.
I unpacked the camera and read through the instructions completely to familiarize myself with the procedure. That done I got started. The app download and procedure is pretty easy, then you follow instructions to connect to camera. Again, very easy. A couple of steps failed on first attempt so I simply repeated the steps with success. Maybe 10 or 15 minute process even for a first timer going slow.
I then tested it holding the camera to verify it was working and monitoring from my phone.
I then plugged in the battery to my phone charger while I installed the mounts outside. They give you a charging cord but no charger but the cord is USB and will plug into the USB slot on your phone or tablet charger or you can purchase the solar charger which mounts separately outside. There is a tiny light just under the charger input on the battery that's orange while charging and green when ready. An hour or two later battery was fully charged and I placed back in camera and installed mini sd card. There is a small silver push tool in the screw bag to fully push in the card.
They give you 3 mounts to hold the camera and I installed 2 of them so I could move the camera if I wanted a different angle view. My back deck is covered so I mounted one pointing away from house and one pointing toward the house to see which I liked best. As you can see I left it pointing away because the field of view is so wide. Anyone approaching from the 2 entrances to the deck will be monitored. My objective is to run them off before the get to the house so I have the sound alarm on too which, while not ear shattering, still helps alert that you have surveillance.
I tested by approaching from the yard and as soon as I got to the upper deck I received a notification of motion on the deck. At that point you can open the app and watch live or playback what's already occurred. There's also an option to speak on the app screen.
I must say there were no surprises. It does a good job. It's best to keep it as close to what you want to monitor as possible as the farther away the harder to see obviously. When we're using the back deck I simply turn off the alarm and push notifications and at night or when away turn them on again. The app gives you the option to add more camera's of course but this was all I needed for now. I use this along with multiple motion flood lights and dust to dawn lights around the outside of house to discourage unauthorized persons approaching and so far working well. For 129.99 it's a great product for entry into surveillance equipment for your property. While the battery power makes installation a breeze keep in mind the need for a good wifi signal for fast communication.

While the battery power makes installation a breeze keep in mind the need for a good wifi signal for fast communication.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great quality and features for the price

I have 3 of these cameras now and plan on getting more. The cameras are really easy to set up with the app (I have iPhone) with a combination of voice prompts from the camera and scanning QR codes with your phone.

I have connected my cameras to existing solar panels I have from a Swann wireless system, but any solar panel with a micro usb connector will fit the camera. I also used the old Swann magnetic mounts I have in place and these cameras stick to them perfectly.

They are reliable and even when viewing remotely they will connect quickly (which my previous system did not do every time). The resolution of the camera is acceptable when on higher resolution settings, especially considering its wireless.

I like how the software embeds the date and time in the recording (this setting can be customised in the app).

In relation to the app. I can only speak of the iPhone app, but I feel like it could be improved. Things such as having Thumbnails of all cameras on one screen like a traditional security camera monitor would be nice (this can be done temporarily, but defaults back to single cameras).

Overall I am impressed with the quality and features of this product.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice security camera

Able to see good day & night time vision for vehicles and people within 10m range
Camera SD card my option 64Gb motion capture is working over that range
Wi-Fi is working well over 11m in my case
Disappointing car number plates are not readable in night or day vision using 1080p at 10m
Most disappointing for me is the PC software camera disconnect within 10 min, these cameras can be powered continuously with an appropriate mains power adapter or over 24hrs using a 20000mah power bank or solar with the correct regulator allowing continuous mp4 capture so the software should have an option for the camera to connect to the PC software continuously to capture and save large files and in my case a NAS with 12Tb with only user manual disconnect. I add a disclaimer not to try any of these suggestions as they work for me however may not work for you so I protect my self with this disclaimer
