Product Description

This four-disc set includes the hit romantic dramas Reckless and Reckless: The Sequel, starring Francesca Annis (Wives and Daughters), Robson Green (Touching Evil), and Michael Kitchen (Mrs. Dalloway). Watch romance try to stay on track through trysts, treachery, and trouble, and follow the complex and emotional decisions of the three who are involved in one very complicated love triangle.

In Reckless, Owen Springer (Robson Green) is a young doctor who has just moved to Manchester to take care of his demanding, hypochondriac father. The last thing he is looking for is an affair...until he meets Anna (Francesca Annis). However, there are two obstacles on Owen’s path to happiness with Anna--she is several years older, and she is married. Undaunted, Owen sets out to charm her, and just when he’s beginning to get somewhere, he’s hit with a bombshell. Anna’s husband is his new boss at the hospital.

In Reckless: The Sequel, Anna has divorced her husband, Richard (Michael Kitchen), and Anna and Owen have made an impetuous decision to marry--at the end of the week. The idea is to have the ceremony while Richard is out of the country, but he hears of their plans and flies back to England. Still in love with Anna, he is determined to save her from what he sees as a potentially disastrous marriage. Will Anna actually marry Owen?

When introducing Reckless, Russell Baker (as host of Masterpiece Theatre) warns the audience that what's to come has no literary merit; it's just entertainment. Entertainment, of course, is no small thing, and Reckless does a pretty good job of it. Owen (Robson Green), a young doctor heading for a new job in Manchester, first meets Anna (the magnetic Francesca Annis) on the train when he borrows her mobile phone (a very clunky piece of technology that places the show firmly in the late 1990s). As their paths continue to cross, Owen finds himself falling for Anna, even though she's at least 10 years older than he is. But Owen's hopes of love run into a serious obstacle when he discovers Anna is married to his boss, the imperious Dr. Richard Crane (Michael Kitchen).

Reckless charts the shifts and upsets of this love triangle--the tone ranges from light comedy to something bordering on Fatal Attraction. It starts slowly, but the second and third parts grow steadily more intricate, suspenseful, and torrid. Bad behavior is on ample display, acted with verve by the cast. The sequel is actually more fun than the original six-hour series; it's only a single two-hour episode, but it takes a more full-bodied satirical approach that doesn't prevent some heart-wrenching turns. Almost all of the original cast return, with a variety of new characters--including Geoffrey Palmer (As Time Goes By) as Richard's father. --Bret Fetzer

I recently purchased this DVD set on a whim and was absolutely captivated by it. It was funny, romantic, touching, sad, suspenseful. All the actors were magnificent, especially the 3 leads. I tried to drag it out 3 nights but found I just couldn't. I finally gave in - it was like devouring a guilty pleasure in one sitting. Surfed the web and found Reckless, the Sequel, and ordered it sent 2-day priority mail. Get them both at the same time - the sequel is just as wonderful. This series reminded me what a joy good entertainment can be.

I just bought the DVD of this series and it's great! The acting and writing are excellent. Writer Paul Abbott also wrote "State of Play" --another great series on BBC America.
And FYI, all of the episodes ARE included in the DVD set. The set includes 4, 2-hour DVDs (3 of the series and 1 of the sequel).

This series, first shown on Masterpiece Theatre, has everything, including romance, comedy and sex, sometimes at the same time. All of the actors are wonderful, displaying perfect comic timing. The dramatic scenes are often poignant.

The love story may be central to the plot, but the adventures of Anna and Owen touch the lives of their relatives, friends and business associates in unexpected ways. The settings range from city, to lush countryside to a working man's neighborhood and pub, to a bustling hospital. There's lots of action as well as some incredibly steamy love scenes.

Reckless is a series to watch more than once. I never tire of revisiting Anna and Owen and all the other characters.

I really enoyed Reckless and was very excited to recieve it for a holiday gift. Like other reviewers I found that much of the middle of the story is absent from the tapes, production must have been [messed] up. I returned it twice but found the same problem each time. Such a shame.

The cast, the story, the direction - all outstanding. This was a treat for the mind and the heart. I loved every second of it and laughed and laughed and laughed and then I ached for love that this story represents. The writing is a magnificent surprise. Surprises throughout as well. Robson Green is a deep, sexy, loving, funny and powerful screen actor. I want to see everything he's ever done. Francesca Annis is a brilliant actress and her scenes with Michael Kitchen were superb and Michael Kitchen was superb. The supporting cast was excellent with the character of Owen's Dad being a special standout. I felt as though I never wanted it to end. I bought two copies for friends and both of them watched all four tapes in one evening - I dragged it out - to experience this thrill over a few days. Four tapes - that includes the marvelous Sequel.
Don't miss this. Share it. Watch it again. And have the best time.

Fans like me who were first introduced to Robson Green as the intellectual and quite asexual Dr. Tony Hill on "Wire in the Blood" are in for a treat. In "Reckless", a much younger Mr. Green plays another doctor with a much warmer, more open and comedic attitude that's probably closer to the actor as he is in personal life. Reminiscent at times of a young Mel Gibson, the impetuous and barely bridled sexual charisma that percolates under the surface of Tony Hill is let out in full display in Owen Springer, and we are powerless to resist. I can't imagine too many men will cop to liking this movie, unless they are gay. It unabashedly plays to female fantasies--how many gorgeous young men would actually stand in a pouring rain and say "I think I'm in love with you"? A completely unrealistic scenario, perhaps, but one guaranteed to leave a woman weak in the knees, especially delivered with such blue-eyed sincerity as Mr. Green musters. The plot revolves around marital infidelity and not even the luscious Mr. Green can make that palatable, but we are willing to put aside our distaste because that blue gaze is hypnotic. I haven't even seen the second half yet, but I imagine that even more of Mr. Green's juicy posterior will be on offer. I'm not complaining about that! I'm just surprised that the faintly pretentious "Masterpiece Theatre" would go with something so softcore and frankly titillating. Alaistair Cooke might have rolled over in his grave. If you're a fan of Mr. Green from his police procedurals, tune into this for a completely different taste of his range. Mr. Green is indeed a well-rounded actor, and I mean that in every sense possible.

I notice a few of the reviewers mention that part of their videos are missing. This obviously had to do with the company. I did not purchase my set (3 tapes) on line, so I have the entire film. I cannot describe how marvelous it is and how credible all of the performaces are. Michael Kitchen is a standout because he must play a part that is simply not very appealing to human sensibility, and he carries it off superbly. Bravo to all, and the age switch is credible and welcome. She is older than he is!!!
I suggest to those who have already purchsed a set without the middle to purchase it from a local vendor and not on line. This is safer.

Dearest Robson Green fans . . . I bought this video set, and when it arrived, I made my popcorn and settled down for a long night of living vicariously through Anna Crane (Francesca Annis) and her steamy love affair with gorgeous Owen Springer (Robson Green). I got to see the first part, which I had missed while it was showing on PBS. Wonderful. Saw the previews for the second part, where the relationship really takes off, and poof! Nothing! We go straight to the last lap, where Anna decides which man she will go with, if either! I was devastated! Hoping it was merely a fluke with the video, I sent it back, and ordered another one. Hoping and wishing it was a fluke! Finally it arrived and poof! Still no middle scene! I don't know how the distributors got away with this, but wait for it to be redistributed, if it ever is. It's too disappointing not to have the whole thing! I give it 2 stars, just because Robson is so appealing.
