By Christy Carlyle
This book hooked me from page one. It takes place in the poor, slum sections of the East End, London – Whitechapel, to be precise – in December 1888. Kate Guthrie has been a widow for ten years. She fees that her current living situation needs to change. She lives with her younger brother in the affluent Moreton Terrace of London. Her younger brother is a veteran of the Second Afghan wars, and is now an esteemed physician. Since his marriage, she has begun to feel like an intruder.
Kate is down on marriage for hersel becaiuse of her own terrible experience. What Kate had thought would be a love match for her, turned out to be two years of torture with a man that beat and abused her. She finds herself at a crossroads…should she marry again? She has been dodging (after having turned down his first proposal) a proposal from a very formal man, Mr. Solomon Thrumble. She fully expected to receive another one at any time. That would spell the end to the only work and life she found fulfilling – doing charity work at a clinic in Whitechapel for the less fortunate. Mr. Thrumble would expect her to entertain his business associates and be his home’s keeper and the mother of an heir and a spare. She wasn’t as sure that she wanted to be a wife, as she felt she needed to be out of her brother’s way.
Kate’s last night’s work in the clinic in Whitechapel leads to the side of a possible victim who barely survived an assault by the infamous ‘Jack the Ripper.’ Kate tries to help out the victim, and agrees to try and locate find the only police detective the victim trusts. Her mercy mission leads Kate to the very place in Whitechapel, unescorted, The Ten Bells Pub, where two of The Ripper’s latest victims had visited shortly before their deaths, in her search for Detective Sergeant Benjamin Quinn. Their mad search to save the latest victim just may also require that they have to save each other, as well.
I loved the story, the pace, and the wonderful characters in this book. The storyline was refreshing, with an adventure and characters in Whitechapel, the poorer section of London. The characters, both secondary as well as the hero and heroine, were wonderfully developed. While this book is a stand alone, I would love to see a future book with some of these characters continued.
I cannot give this book less than FIVE STARS!
