I've been reading fiction and non-fiction about WWII, Nazi Germany, and the Holocaust for many years. These books generally focused on life in concentration camps; individual non-Jews who befriended Jews and helped them escape the Holocaust; non-Jews who fell in love with Jews; Jewish women who fell in love with SS men; and female spies during this period.

The series, The Lion's Den, by Eoin Dempsey, is unique in that it is a family saga, spread over the years leading up to WWII. It begins in New Jersey and moves to Berlin, Paris, southern France, and other European locations. The story is riveting and at times, breathtaking in its audacity.

It's an ambitious, sumptuously written tableau of many characters within a family and their individual stories and challenges, superimposed on the horrors of growing anti-Semitism in Nazi Germany.

Eoin Dempsey compassionately paints each of his characters in a three-dimensional way. I quickly began caring about each family member -- and peripheral characters -- even when they were behaving poorly. The family patriarch, Seamus, is a complex, flawed man who desperately tries to do the right thing, but the world keeps tilting and he starts to live in an uncomfortable world of gray ethics.

One of Seamus's children becomes deeply embroiled in the world of Nazi propaganda, and I was horrified at how her life began to unravel and threaten her family members. On the other hand, her sister became a Resistance fighter in a very personal way, with their worlds clashing.

Each book advances the story and character development, and offers a specific, political sub-plot.
While the individual books can be read on their own, the reader will benefit from the big picture that is provided by reading the entire series.

I don't wish to provide further details, because the reader needs to enjoy the heart-pounding, heart-soothing story on their own. I highly recommend the series. I practically inhaled each book and did not want the series to end; I was so attached to the characters and wanted to see what happened next in their lives.

According to the author's afterword, there is more in store. Lucky for us readers!

This was a fantastic ending to an extraordinary series. I have followed The Lions Den series since book one and I fell in love with the Ritter Family from the very first page. The author, Eoin Dempsey, magnificently created such impressive and intriguing characters. No matter which character a chapter followed, it was always unputdownable. For Historical Fiction lovers, if you haven’t read the Lions Den series, I strongly suggest that you do. It follows the American Ritter Family as they move from America to Berlin, Germany in 1932. The series follows their time in Berlin from 1932-1939 as the family experiences raising young, impressionable children in Nazi Germany, the coming of age of the eldest Ritter children and their joining of resistance networks, and the patriarch, Seamus, finding his new wife Lisa and building a life together. They navigate through anti-semitism, hatred, murder, corruption, and so much more during their time. Each characters experience is so well-written, you will fall in love with each character and their story, guaranteed!

This book was a perfect ending to their journey and I am so excited that one of the main characters, Maureen, is getting a well-deserved spin-off of her own! Eoin Dempsey is a remarkable and truly talented writer and I am eager to read future books and series by him! This is definitely a must read.

Eoin Dempsey's 6 books about Hitler's rise to power from the perspective of an immigrated American family is just plain excellent and accurate. It captures the nuances, idiosyncrasies, unmittigated pride and prejudice, moods, atmosphere, grandioseness and devoted commitment to nationalism of the German people. OK, how do I know all this? I was a teenage ICYE Exchange Student for a full year in 1964-65 during which time I lived with a German family, attended Gymnasium and spoke only German. I also spent 3 years in Germany in the Military. In both of those situations I was able to visit East Berlin where I saw the remaining devastation of WWII, the Wall, Hitler's bunker, the room where they hung the men on hooks for their coup attempts, Dauchau in West Germany and much more. Back to the books... All of what I experienced is captured in Dempsey's writing and portrays a period of time that noone can begin to understand completely. He captures it. Read it! And, thank you Eoin for writing it.

It is a story unlike many others I’ve read. Each book tells someone else’s story, and I am thankful for each one. My Grandparents came from Russia and Austria as children, so they were the lucky ones, and my parents and their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren felt, and feel lucky to be living in the United States. I have to read as many of the war stories I can to understand what all those in Russsia, Austria, and all the European nations went through. Many were not lucky enough to emigrate, many ended up in concentration camps, and some came out without the rest of their families. We read these stories to honor them, and never forget.

There are parts (without giving anything away) that are difficult to read, but with what is happening around the world everyone should understand what happened in the past can be repeated in the future, and, I enjoyed the characters as they grew into who they were meant to be. Novels that spend more than one book can sometimes be very annoying, but the saga of this family during the 1930s in Germany when so much history was being created so quickly certainly deserve this six book series. I was committed to finding out more about the Ritter family by the time I finish reading the first volume, and the six volume was as satisfying as the first. The author does leave a teaser by saying that there will be a new series about Maureen Ritter which will probably become a must-read as we know from history that France is about to experience the humiliation of invasion and occupation by Nazi Germany.

An unexpected job offer from a relative takes them to Germany. The story line revolves around their lives during Hitler's rise to power from 1932 until the beginning of WW2 in1939. This was a different book for me given it's setting & timeline. The characters are well developed. There is plenty of suspense. I highly recommend these 6 novels. Looking forward to the next series.

I felt like I was traveling with them, feeling all their fears and frustrations, but knew what they were going to be facing as Hitler took over the country. They were ordinary people who had the resources to do extraordinary things for desperate Jews during an awful time in history. I look forward to more stories with Maureen!

I've enjoyed the series, obviously. Or I wouldn't be reading book #6. I agree with other reviews: a unique approach to Nazi Germany, a good attempt to create live characters. But... But there are mistakes that should not be. At the very end of the book, a chapter called 'September 3rd, 1939'. The author is saying that Poland collapsed in six weeks, and the UK and France were about to declare a war on Germany. Well, in fact, they did declare a war. Exactly on September 3rd, 1939. And Poland did fight for six weeks -- but nobody knew it in the beginning of September, as the war only started on September 1st. And mentioning Polish defeat in the war without mentioning that Soviet Union, the Bolsheviks (or 'Bolshevists', as they are referred to in the book), also attacked Poland on September 17th. In a perfect union with Nazis. Overall, this last chapter felt like an attempt to quickly wrap up the story and move on.

You get drawn into story to the point you feel you are actually there watching Hitler take over Germany and the Jewish people. I've read all of Dempsey's books and enjoyed each one. What a talented writer.
