As she shapes precious stones into art, protagonist Iris Dashwood learns these truths, and in the process learns how to reconstruct truth, correct injustice, and make peace with a difficult past. Iris' tortured path to discovery is wrapped in a rousing, suspense-filled story complete with several "I didn't see THAT coming" moments. This novel is both readable and insightful, and increasingly hard to put down as the story develops. This is DiSilverio's best work to date, and it bodes well for her future novels.
There’s heart here, and enough writing chops to put that heart forward without being pushy about it. Characters are strong even while they are flawed—and it’s not just Iris. This insular community is full of people, real people with real souls, and as the tension ratcheted up so did my feelings for them.
I cared, and did not want to let any of them go, not even the characters I despised. Rare craftsmanship indeed.
