The past almost 45 years of my life has been significantly dedicated to helping congregations who are aging, declining, or dysfunctional to once again live as vital and vibrant congregations. So, when I see a new book that focuses on a nationwide effort by a major denomination to replant churches, I rejoice.

It is especially good to see it coming from a ministry friend of 35 years—Mark Clifton—who like me began his ministry focused on the planting of new congregations, but is now using that experience to help old congregations reclaim glory.

Mark admits this is not easy when he says, “It’s often easier to close a dying church and go across the street to plant a new one than it is to replant.” [18]

The title of his book—Reclaiming Glory—identifies why, even though it is difficult, it is a worthy journey. He focuses his motivation on the Triune God. “We don’t want to see churches replanted just to make us feel better about the abysmal death rate among evangelical churches. We want to replant churches so God will be glorified as he does what he does best—bringing life out of death.” [35]

Mark’s desire is that old churches will once again be successful. “Success—bearing fruit in the life of a church—means having a pattern of making disciples who make disciples that results in the community being noticeably better.” [7] I would also believe it is important to define what significance and surrender means for churches who are replanting.

Mark suggests four pathways to replanting. 1. Give the building to a church plant. 2. Share the building with a church plant. 3. Merge with a church plant. 4. Planting from within. His book shares some details about how each of these would work.

His pathway of sharing a church’s building with a church plant raised for me this thought: A key question for churches to consider when they build a building is to think about with whom they would share it. New buildings should be for the Kingdom of God and not for one church family alone.

The application of this book for various denominational bodies does have some challenges the wise reader can overcome. Mark is the senior director of Replanting/Revitalization at the North American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. This book is focused on what Southern Baptists are doing, and has some theology, philosophy, and methodology that will not always translate into other denominational families without putting the material through some filters of understanding, plus reframing the message and the language.

At the same time, I highly recommend the book for those who can adapt its insights and learnings into their unique situation.

In "Reclaiming Glory," Mark Clifton puts forth the bold assertion that "nothing about a dying church brings glory to God." Tragically, 900 Southern Baptist Churches shut down and die each year. However, Clifton believes that God can call and raise up a generation of men with a mission of revitalizing a dying church. As one of those God called men, this book really touched my heart. The day to day struggles of replanting a dying church are real and great, but God is also real and God is also great. God never said that it was going to be easy. But He did promise to never leave you nor forsake you. "Reclaiming Glory" helped to give me hope and a new focus. It is one of the best books that I have read on church revitalization. If you are a seminary student, pastor, deacon, or a church leader of any kind, you need to read this book.

I am a recently called Pastor for a church that is in a revitalization phase of life. I eagerly awaited Mark Clifton's book because I knew he would have great insight. Reclaiming Glory is a must read and I could not recommend it too highly. As a revitalization pastor in his first four months, I have already experienced most of what Mark writes about. I have seen older church members who had lost hope in their church be invigorated and excited about the future through Christ-Centered preaching. They just needed to fall in love with Jesus again and have someone love on them and let them know they have an important role in the revitalization effort. Mark speaks the truth and any man thinking about revitalization needs to purchase this book now. Reclaiming Glory is an inspiration and encouragement to keep pressing forward through the difficult times of a revitalization. I pray men will read this book and be courageous enough to replant and revitalize churches to the Glory of God.

The principles that Mark explains make sense and they are not too complicated. By keeping strategies simple they can be easier to reproduce in any context. My hope is that many pastors who seek to lead their churches in revitalization or replanting will read this book.
