In "Reclaiming Yourself from Binge Eating," Leora Fulvio comes across as a very loving, thoughtful author. She truly wants to help anyone who struggles with binge eating due to a variety of causes.
This book will help you realize why you would binge eat in the first place. Many times it has to do with childhood issues. In fact I know two people who are binge eaters and both of them had food taken away or restricted when they were children. Some of the other issues explained in the book reveal that some people also try to get rid of negative feelings by eating a lot. So whatever your issue is it is probably discussed in this book.
Some of the very helpful advice in this book includes the section on clearing foods that are trigger foods from your house. There is also a list of 101 things to do instead of binging. There is also information on how to stop unhealthy thought patterns. There is a list of affirmation that you can practice saying instead of listening to your horrible inner critic.
A lot of this book is about self-acceptance and Leora Fulvio encourages you to really stop abusing yourself and hating yourself. Instead she promotes loving yourself and nurturing your body. Her theory is that if you hate your body you will treat it badly. If you love your body you will be kind to your body.
What Leora Fulvio also promotes is mindful eating. If you eat because of loneliness, depression or anxiety the cause of these issues should be researched. This can be done with all the questions in this book and a journal.
At the end of the book there is a section on what to do if you have a relapse.Read more ›
In Reclaiming Yourself from Binge Eating: A Step-By-Step Guide to Healing, Ms. Fulvio, a marriage and family therapist, helps you negotiate your break up with binge eating and invites you to reflect on 34 steps that impart knowledge, hope, and guidance for recovery.
These 34 chapters include an exploration plus an assignment and cover topics such as: Balancing Self-Acceptance with the Need to Change; Dealing with Self-Sabotage; Dealing with Your Inner Critic; Learn Intuitive Eating; Overpowering Your Urge to Binge; Sleep Issues and Night Eating.
To support your growth, Ms. Fulvio recommends cultivating a mindfulness and meditation practice: "Mindfulness helps to decrease binge eating by helping you fully experience all your emotions, the joyful ones and the hard ones. By letting yourself feel your feelings, even the really difficult ones, you increase your capacity for sitting with painful and even distressing moods, thoughts and sensations. When you are more able to sit with these feelings, you don't feel driven to do something about it. There is nothing to be done with feelings other than feel them."
Ms. Fulvio's book will help you move away from your bondage to bingeing and grow more fully into healing and wholeness.
Leora Fulvio writes from a very personal place describing her own struggles with food and emphasizes the fact that you are not alone in your struggle - millions of people also have the same issues. The good news is that many of them have also freed themselves from the cycle and so can you.
If you are looking for a "5 ways to stop binge-eating NOW" type book, this isn't it. This books requires some emotional work on the part of the reader, but the author has thought very carefully about the setbacks and pitfalls along the way, and has given a lot of advice about what to do in challenging social situations and what to do when you just want to give up.
The advice in the book is oriented specifically towards binge-eating, but her advice is so universal I think it can be applied to a lot of compulsive, unhealthy behaviors. The parts I went back to over and over again are the appendices, which give lots of practical tools and resources for overcoming tough days and situations, such as "Quick Tips to stop a Binge in its Tracks", "PMS and Binge Eating", and what I found to be the most insightful, "When You Feel Like Giving Up On This Book".
