Oddly, the series hasn't really looked into his past.
Jason has survived one step ahead of those that want him dead.

This is one of the better urban fantasy series that I've read. I enjoyed this book, and recommend it, but I did not appreciate it as much as the previous novels. In some ways the protagonist seems to have become a caricature of himself - I know he is understandably paranoid, but he could make friends in the early books. In this book he seems socially handicapped. And while there was lots of actions, the book ended abruptly and feels like half of a story. While I recommend it for those who enjoyed the first three, you may want to wait until book five is released before reading it.

My rating would be five stars, except for the strange amount of grammatical errors. The one that stands out in my mind is "due" instead of "do". Silly mistakes like that and more of them than I noticed in previous books in this series.

Moving away from the grammar and into the plot. The author sends us on a roller coaster ride of twists and turns. Former enemies become somewhat allies. Other enemies show up and finally get what's coming to them. Can't wait for the next book. Just hope the author either gets more time with an editor or whoever edits their work does a better job next time.

This guy sure loves to murder. Runs into a problem with others, murder. Someone threatens him, murder. He hears some rumors, murder. You get it. Other than the wanton violence, it's an interesting story. There is no plot in place, so don't expect any finale or meaningful dialogue from encounters preordained since the beginning of the series. If he meets or slightly encounters enemies he goes with the nuclear option and nukes them from orbit. His only possible nemesis in House Duvall is played more so like a gag than anything. If you're planning on reading this don't expect much other than casual murder and slow exploration of the MCs plight and powers. There is sort of a cliffhanger, but it's meh. they tried many times to justify the MCs penchant for murderhoboing any supernatural problems he ran into, but by the end it's almost laughable to justify anymore.

Rags to riches stories have a problem, that being it is necessary to change the focus from following a poor sod scrambling to exist, to one of… well, something else.

One common path is empire building, which is what we have here. If an author chooses this path, it is important to avoid the pitfalls of excessive meetings, having the MC become 2 dimensional, and repeating themes.

Unfortunately, that is exactly what happens here. Many meetings, Callum inventing new technologies in a few paragraphs and then using them to wipe out more and more of the same old bad guys. No surprises, nothing really new.

Could have had the fae be really quirky. Could have had interesting things come out of the new portals. Could have had Callum screw up in a really amusing manner.

But, instead, meetings. Yawn
