RECOIL turns any outdoor space into a digitally enhanced, multiplayer battlefield. Using in-ear surround sound, haptic response weaponry, and smartphone integrated gameplay, players are able to spawn into the middle of the most immersive battlefield they’ve ever experienced. RECOIL is defining a new category of AR competitive game play outside. By purchasing the Starter Set—which includes your game hub (a Wifi Router used to create a 250 square foot radius of gameplay) and two RK-Spitfire pistols— you can choose from a variety of FPS-inspired multiplayer modes, including Team Deathmatch and Search & Destroy.
Once you’ve purchased the Starter Set (necessary to play the game), download the free Recoil app (available for Droid or iPhone), connect your smart phone device to your blaster using the phone clamp, and then pair the two devices via Bluetooth.
Recoil uses your phone’s GPS capabilities to create location-based gameplay with the Recoil app. That includes running back to your respawn point when you get killed, picking up supplies at the ammo depot, running to mission objectives such as a bomb defusal point, and much more.
The game also uses the camera’s phone to create AR enhancements, so when you pick up an airstrike, your camera is activated, displaying a rocket launcher placed in the real world that you can use to fire off against enemies.
Once you’ve had some practice, add on to your arsenal with the SR-12 Rogue (a high fire-rate and fully automatic machine with quick ammo reload) additional Spitfires (the compact, versatile and effective handgun), and the Frag Grenade, an actual grenade you can launch at your enemy. With a simple one-button design, the time delayed explosive works off IR technology to emit a high blast radius for anyone nearby. It’s the boom that clears the room.
Add up to sixteen players in any one game.

First off the construction quality seems very sturdy for the actual weapons themselves. They have a hefty feel to them, and when you shoot or take damage you feel a satisfying vibration (or recoil). They feel like they can take a drop or two, though I'm not eager to test that out given the price tag. What is NOT of sturdy build quality is the phone mount (a shame since you're asking it to hold your $500+ smartphone). While unscrewing one to loosen it up for my iPhone 7 the knob completely popped off, causing the entire assembly to come apart. I got it back together but now I'm nervous about it.
The game itself is FUN... when it works. We've had the set open for no longer than 2 hours and haven't managed a single game without some technical issue. First it was the app on my iPhone 7 constantly crashing/freezing. Since I have a 7 and my son has a 6s we decided a hard reboot of my phone was in order. This seemed to help the app crashing problem, but then we started getting randomly disconnected from the game hub (basically a cheap WiFi router). The hub is supposed to have a range of 250 feet, and while I understand that walls and other devices can interfere with that we were getting completely disconnected from the game hub while standing right over it.
The grenade is cool, though it does way too little damage (basically the same/slightly more than a "hit" from the guns).
So we'll try it outside later and see if some open air will expand the range of the hub, if so I'll come back and update my review. Right now two stars: one star off for app crashes (if it doesn't crash anymore I'll assume the device reboot helped and put the star back), one star off for getting disconnected from the hub while less than 6 feet away (maybe I'll put the star back if it works better outside), and one star off for one of the phone mounts having substandard build quality (this star is probably not coming back).
1) Close the app (not just move it to background - close it compleatly)
2) Switch off the gun
3) Set airplane mode on the phone (it will disable BT and WiFi)
4) Enable WiFi and connect to recoil network
5) Enable BT
6) Run the app
7) Connect the phone to the gun
8) Run the battle.
After this procedure you always be back in the game.
