Editorial Reviews

DJ Shadow, is rightly regarded as one of the most influential and consistently innovative artists to emerge from music in the last 20 years, has a collection of his finest recordings released on September 25th via UMe. Known as "an electronic musical pioneer and turntable mastermind" (Pitchfork.com) Reconstructed: The Best Of DJ Shadow will be released on one single CD and double vinyl.

All the music is drawn from Shadow s 20-year career - from the early pre-Mo Wax days, right up to the present and his most recent album, The Less You Know, The Better. Perhaps most exciting to Shadow fans is the inclusion of two brand new tracks, including the pop masterpiece Listen, featuring legendary vocalist Terry Reid.

Josh Davis, aka DJ Shadow, changed the game in 1996 with the release of his universally acclaimed debut album Endtroducing... Made entirely from samples, Endtroducing... was like nothing that had come before. As the New York Times stated, the critically acclaimed Endtroducing ... helped define the then cutting-edge genre of instrumental hip-hop: dance music with symphonic sweep built from scores of samples dug out of eclectic and often obscure recordings. And TIME Magazine named it as one of 100 top albums since 1954. Sixteen years on and it remains as potent and revered an album as it was on release. Shadow followed up two years later by making the lion's share of the music on the 1998 U.N.K.L.E. album, Psyence Fiction, an album with James Lavelle, featuring Thom Yorke, Ian Brown and Richard Ashcroft amongst others. By the time he released The Private Press, 2002, Davis felt he had taken emotive instrumental music created entirely from samples as far as it could go and the new record took Shadow into new territories confounding those who were waiting on Endtroducing...Part 2. The Private Press remains one of the most underrated follow-up albums. The Outsider (2006) saw DJ Shadow making a hip-hop record featuring some of leading exponents of the Bay Area s then burgeoning Hyphy scene while last year s The Less You Know, the Better, was, according to according to Stool Pigeon magazine, a testament to his enduring sampling genius .

As a DJ Shadow fan I gotta say that Entroducing and The Private Press changed my idea of what instrumental "hip hop" could be, up until that time the closet thing I'd heard to anything like those albums was Scratchology and maybe stuff like the early 93 'Til Infinity (LP Version), and of course Madlib (Beat Konducta Vol. 1-2: Movie Scenes,Beat Konducta Vol. 3 & 4: In India) and J Dilla Donuts who are in a category of their own, but listening to some of the newer songs on reconstructed gives me a feeling of "yea they sound good" but don't really move me, the only exception would be "High Noon" . Don't get the wrong idea, I'm not one of those every album has to sound exactly like Entroducing people, and every artist has to explore and grow (or should at least), but there was something about the way the songs complemented each other on Entroducing and the Private Press that keeps them on my car's mp3 play list to this day, which as other people have said, and also in my opinion is kind of missing here, but its still a good cool out album....

BTW: I thought the DJ Shadow's Infamous South Beach set was amazing, from which he got removed off the stage because he combined Hip Hop, with everything from dub, electronica, house, and the kitchen sink, and the crowd at the club just wasn't ready for it, you can listen to it on his (if I can link it) sound cloud page (or sound + those fluffy things in the air page),and there are some other musical gold nuggets there as well.

I'm a relatively new shadow fan, so I can't really speak of the worth of this as a 'best of' album. However, it kicks ass, track after track. I've been listening to it almost daily for a few weeks now.

DJ Shadow is considered a key figure in the development of instrumental hip hop and this CD captures a good sampling of his works. It's a great, mellow CD. He is one of my favorites.

My DH asked for this CD on his Xmas gift list, so I got it for him. He says that it is his favorite album -- EVER -- and that every time he listens to it, he hears some new nuance while revisiting old favorites. The tracks are supple, inventive, and extraordinarily well done. It's the kind of music that if you don't know what's playing you want to know who it is right now so that you can immediately rush out and get it.

Great good album, all songs are good images of his carreer. I would add some artwork, but its ok, it just minimalistic style.
