This book is a bit much of the "begets" of ancestors and it take a slog to get through it, BUT then it goes into great detail of the building of the Bell Rock Lighthouse and that part is rather fascinating to read of the struggle and the way they had to contend with the forces of nature.

But I love anything by the Stevenson's. PLEASE read the "Baby Book" his mother wrote of him- it is out of this world! He was such a bright child, and back then a LOT MORE was expected, and gotten! from children. For instance, properly addressing your elders, using protocol such as bowing good night (Robert went to bed morose one night and his mother asked what was the matter, and he said he did not think he gave his mother a "proper bow" good night, I think he was about 3 yrs old then not sure) anyway, it will make you laugh out loud, weep, and it is a book I will always always remember.

But this is about a family of engineers! WAY worth reading. I love it, just read it yourself to find out. Anything by this family is wonderful

A fascinating book, in terms of both the quality of the narrative and the story it tells of engineering skill, dedication to completion of a challenging project, and dogged determination in the face of often difficult and dangerous circumstances.

I read this book in the 1970s. Thomas A. Lang, a principal engineer at Leeds, Hill, and Jewett in San Francisco loaned me his copy so I could understand what engineers did. I went to graduate school in Seattle and engineers were seemingly a dime-a-dozen on Boeing's payroll. When there was a downturn the headlines would report that Boeing had fired several thousand engineers. That "dime-a-dozen" was a false impression. Engineering is a serious calling, as Stevenson's "Records" shows. Stevenson's forefathers labored long and lovingly protecting the coasts and harbors of Scotland. They observed how the currents and waves worked on the coasts and saw how to build the groins and moles to stabilize the shore.

Lang was a veteran of the Snowy Mountain Engineering Company, designers of Australia's largest infrastructure project. When serious flooding hit California, he was one of those called in to work out how to deal with it. I am a mathematician and did a small consulting job for Leeds Hill and Jewett and we discussed mathematics as applied to engineering. A new hot-shot employee had come to LHJ and was working on a large underground storage tank to be built in British Columbia. In those days computers were primitive, and LHJ had a small PDP. big enough to analyze the stability of the excavation using finite element methods to deal with the partial differential equations. Lang asked the new guy if he knew exactly how the finite element method worked. The new guy shrugged this off saying that it was "standard." Besides, why did Lang want to know this? Lang replied: "You will understand why if I tell you that I may ask you to go to British Columbia and supervise the work from inside the excavation." When your life is at risk, you understand that nothing should be left to chance.

Everybody who wants to understand what engineering is should read this book.
